I am fairly new to this also but if you go to the illness and disease thread you can find out other wayys of treatment such as red pepper can be used for worming anf this does not effect the eggs where as the chemicals prevents you from consuming them for several weeks. Just ask the folks here and they will give you some good advice. Welcome to bycHi, I live in Metairie, and I got 3 chicks at the end of May. They're about 8 or 9 weeks old at this point. I bought a copy of Raising Chickens for Dummies , and it has a section which mentions several vaccinations that are recommended based on regional needs (such as for mycoplasma gallisepticum, Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, fowl pox, infectious coryza, laryngotracheitis, avian encephalomyelitis, and fowl cholera). I called the office of Dr. Rich (the only chicken and bird specific vet that I'm aware of here in Metairie) to get some info, and the receptionist informed me that the doctor does not give vaccinations or wormers unless a need arises based off of a stool sample from the chickens. This seems contradictory from the recommendations I've read both online and in Raising Chickens. I was under the impression that it was a good idea to do a broad specturm wormer at least twice a year, and I would really like to get some vaccines for disease that are very previlent in my area. Does anyone have any advice on this? Is there another vet in this area that I can get the vaccines and wormer from? Should I search fro the products online and administer them myself?

Thanks. I bought wormer but have 't used it, no confidence in myself about that, I guess, but I can definitely do red pepper. I have conquered pox vaccination, so worming is next. I even set up my notebook. Can my 4 month olds be given red pepper?
