Mine are obsessed with it and will mow you down for it. Raw, frozen, or cooked they don't care. They pick out the seeds first than play keep away with the rest.
If you google feeding chickens you can get a list of food chickens can't have. I use to make my own feed before I found organic feed.
Sorry to here about the horse. I had horses growing up. I got attached to horses that we didn't own. He was lucky to have you care for him. p
(Okra is not listed either way. But I'm sure it's ok. Try feeding it to a rooster and see. If it doesn't work, then rooster stew?

Cause you know after that fire "thing" a while, back it was listed in my chart that I am banned from having matches. 
Kuntrygirl, this summer I would sometimes go to a fresh fruit stand. One day I asked about thrown out veggies for my chickens. and they said I could take whatever I wanted from the boxes in back. I don't give my chickens spoiled food, but to my surprise I couldn't even tell why they threw out most of the food. Maybe the shape? Anyway I got lots of fresh not spoiled food for my chickens that I also enjoyed. To be a good customer I did always buy some from him , too.
I'm not a canning expert but we had a big garden growing up. We caned a lot . I've done some of my own threw the years. I don't remember my mom adding any. I've never added any. I think shelf life depends on what you preserve . I'm sure you could goggle shelf life. Some recipes tell you shelf life. P

When canning tomatoes/salsa, etc. do you add "additives or preserves" to the food to help it with preserving? Is there such a thing as "natural preserving" and not having to use anything besides the fruit or vegetable that you are canning?
And exactly how long can preserves/canned foods last? 20 years? 30 years? 50 years?
Sounds good. I would think that as long as you don't open it after you have canned it, that it would last for forever. But when you open it, you have to eat it and then refrigerate. I am doing all the research that i can to learn more. I want to stock up for the future.

Scientist found a can of chicken meat in the 50's or 60's that was over 100 years old. While no one was brave enough to taste it they did test it and found that it was eatable. Tomatoes and salsa can be caned water bath without preservatives as long as they are NOT GMO. If they are GMO you either need to add something like vinegar to raise the acid level or pressure can. The GMO tomatoes are designed to have a lower acid level.
But even if you add vinegar, that's ok because that's still "natural". Other than that, no other preservatives are added right? And unless the tomatoes come from your garden, you really wouldn't know if they are GMO or not. I never see any tags on anything in the grocery store.
