"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

They do that a lot. Wait until you do know and they try to sell you on something they have no real clue on. The shoe will be on the other foot then. Just to be for-warned: Most TSC stores know little to nothing about chickens, just because they sell it doesn't mean they have a clue. The best advice I ever got from there came from customers in the same isle while the employee stood there with a blank expression on his face.
We only go to TSC when the others stores in town don't have something. Our local store is the one that gives me the looks.. That's the down side of livin' out in the country - Everyone else is over 20 miles away.

I was beginning to worry! I...wait...we have gotten 12 soft shells since last month - that's when they started laying.

So, naturally I came here for answers.

That way, the guy at the ag store doesn't look at me like I'm an idiot...LOL..Now that I think about it - he does that a lot.

If I were getting that many soft shells and diet was correct then I would assume the chicken to have some sort of health malady that would be causing it. Just like people not everyone is perfect at the job of reproduction. I would stalk the nest box and figure out who is doing it. Maybe separate her if possible to confirm it. Then I would see if the problem could be helped with additional supplements or consider "other" options. My concern would be a soft egg getting lodged and causing the hen serious discomfort.

I have not had this happen, but that would be my initial thoughts if it did. Maybe someone else has experienced this.

Now, I know the AG Store Guy would think I was an idiot...

But. um. Fermented food..??.. Are you talking about corn mash "stuff"?

Like I said, I have NOOOO idea what I am doing half the time.
Quickest and easiest way: 5 gal bucket, add layer feed, mix and cover with water, add splash of apple cider vinegar with mother (Bragg's brand at walmart), cover loosely and let ferment. Scoop out with slotted spoon and keep adding feed and water to the mix. If it smells a little like vomit or a minty port o potty, bubbles, and white film on top you have a great deep fermentation.

Yea, I was kind happy as well. That's a few bags of chicken feed. More than I had before. So, I'm ok with it.

Oh don't get me started with Obama Care. That is ridiculous. I am TOTALLY AGAINST Obama care. That is the STUPIDEST (is that a word?) idea that I have EVER heard if. I am so upset about that Obama care, I would bite a nail and crunch it up to make sand. A lot of small companies will close down and people will be out of a job because of the Obama Care. I wonder if he thought about that. Then that will affect the unemployment rate. How can you MAKE someone get insurance? Seriously !!!!!!!!!! :smack

Don't get me started with that. :duc

Didn't mean for you to get the matches!

Soft shelled eggs are common, in some chickens when they first start laying, but this 2 eggs in one day is news to me. I had a neighbor, who got softshells from her RIRs very often and they were a couple years old. I tried to play a trick on her once and put 4 extra eggs into her hens' nest after she had gathered 2 from her 3 hens, but she caught me on it, cause my Orpington eggs were darker!
I also get a softshell or two from the turkeys, but now often, maybe 3 a year from 15 hens.
We went out to the coop this morning around 8 to let them out. Found 2 soft shells in the dirt in the run. Then there were 4 when I checked around 11. Yesterday, we collected 6 eggs, 2 of those were soft shell too.

I had ATT internet but I dropped it. I"m thinking about Charter Cable Internet. It would be $25.00 a month for wireless.

That sounds like a good deal from Charter, but when I called about the advertisement, they said that price was the bundle price if you got phone, internet and basic tv, for a certain number of months, but I could be wrong,

I'll try that. Thanks.

I had a what I think is a production red or maybe a gold sex link? (TSC buy as a RIR and she grew into a goldish red with white) She did the 2 a day thing several times in her first two months but then took a 2 week break and started laying 1 almost every day. She was isolated so I know they were hers and you couldn't match that pattern she has for anything. She has x-large brown eggs with a lot of white speckels on the skinny end and very few on the fat end. They are the exact pattern just spaced out more on the larger side.
