i will NEVER allow broodies again! this has been a friggin' nightmare.

One hatched & was running around the coop by itself this morning, dry & fluffy & healthy, while the TWO hens - yes they are battling it out again - were back on the nest. I threw a towel over them & checked & another egg was pipping. I had to go into work for a while so off I went.

got home around 1 & checked & the 2nd chick had hatched out & was laying there all cold & hardly breathing. the two silly hens were running around the coop clucking after the lone dry chick, totally ignoring the nest w/the new hatchling.

I pulled out my brooder (deep sigh) & set it up & brought the hatchling inside, then I went outside & caught the dry fluffy one & brought it inside & put it in the brooder also, since I know it had not had anything to eat or drink in probably going on 48 hrs now. It is doing fine - it took up eating & drinking w/no problems.

The two silly old hens immediately got back on the nest ( & boy is it stinky & dirty by now) & are once again setting on the remaining eggs.

The hatchling is drying out nicely & breathing normally.

the fluffy one is screaming its head off unless I hold it (guess what, I'm fixing to go take a nap- so it will just have to deal w/being in the brooder box w/its sibling).

i did not want to brood chicks but guess I'm stuck w/it.

To boot, the old feral barn cat has moved her kittens into the old armadillo tunnel in my front flower bed. I fed her earlier & will continue to feed & try to get them used to eating there, then gradually move my live trap into place & hopefully trap them in a few weeks so I can have them spayed & neutered.

if any more chicks hatch out, I'll remove them as they do & bring them inside to brood.

when this is over, if I see any more signs of broodiness in those two old biddies, I promise you I will have their butts packed in ice. This has got to stop!

And after checking pics on Feathersite, I realize that I have two cuckoo marans GIRLS so far!!! yay!!!! I had forgotten what they looked like!

Hey Terri, in regards to the cats. I have 2 live traps also. One regular size and one smaller. You are welcome to borrow them if you would like to try to trap all of them at the same time. We used them months back to trap some cats over at a rental house. Those kittens were really small and they still had no trouble triggering the traps. Even though they were hissing and spitting.....it didn't take any longer than 24 hours for them to realize that people were awesome to snuggle with

Its good of you to get them fixed and feed them. It always makes me smile to know other people do good things for animals that don't have a traditional family.

Have any of you heard of Villalobos? She rescues Pit Bulls. She used to be in California, but is now in New Orleans. I follow her on FB. She has also had a show on Animal Planet for a few years. Pit Bulls and Parolees. She mostly hires Parolees to give them a chance at getting back into a regular job situation. I love reading the rescue stories.

Another question. Is there a good website that I could refer to that has good basic info on Chicken genetics?

I had the privilege of helping my daughter pick out a dress etc for homecoming next weekend. Wow, they grow up so fast!

Send them my way. I'd love to have another hen that goes broody!

Thanks - I have live traps also. Started feeding them today to get them used to the front porch, then will move the trap next week, then start getting them used to that & hopefully be getting some of them spayed/neutered in a few more weeks!

7-8 but no signs of pipping or anything. They are so dirty from the other 2 hatching & the 2 hens in there. I really really hate this. I will never do this again. I will break these two broodies if I have to put them in my freezer & from now on, eggs will only hatch in my incubator!

The 2 that did hatch are doing quite fine in the utility room. Tomorrow I'll set up my outdoor brooder & move them there.

Freezer Camp...Freezer Camp!!! I'm glad your two new ones are doing well. On the bright side, you could be like Julie and have 10 (I think that's what I counted) baby ducks show up!!

Any news on mama guinea?

One of my mares decided to have a tummy ache tonight. She felt really hot as well. Took her temp and it was up. Spent a while cooling her off with the hose. Then walked her around and let her graze. Had my neighbor come give her banamine (I don't do needles in veins). I put her in a stall with a fan and hay and will watch her through the night. She's bred and I want to make sure she's not losing the baby. She seems to be doing better, but if anything else comes up, I will be calling the vet. I figure an emergency farm call costs the same if it's at 6 pm or 1 am...so I might as well get my money's worth.

I think next spring will be seeing the construction of a meaty pen and my first forage into raising meat birds. One's thing for sure - I am not going to poison my family.

..."Assistant to the director of the China's National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment said that because China was “still developing” it would not be adopting international food safety standards, but rather rely on “national conditions,” according to the South China Morning Post.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a report earlier this year linking the deaths of more than 500 dogs and the sickening of up to 2,500 animals to contaminated chicken found in dog treats processed in China.
Under the new trade agreement, no inspector from the FDA will be present at the Chinese processing facilities. Because the chicken will only be processed in China, it won’t require any point-of-origin label, and consumers won’t be , able to tell where their chicken has been...."

I have been growing almost all our food, now for about 7 years. I am old as dirt and was on over a dozen medications and a heart monitor, told by several doctors that I would be in a wheelchair for life, within 6 months. I knew I had to do something and had gardened 100% organically, back when my younger daughter was allergic to baby foods in the groceries, among a lot of other things. Doctors through their hands up and said she was allergic to the commercial fertilizers and pesticides and no one made organic baby food. Back then, hardly anyone knew what ORGANIC was, 40 years ago. She is now a mother with a very healthy 11 year old of her own and gardens Organically. She comes and gets rabbit manure for fertilizer, along with wood ashes, etc.
After I got to thinking we are what we eat, I started raising our own meat, too. Now 7 years older, I am on no meds, no cancer, no heart trouble, no wheelchair, not even a cane. We eat well on the animals I raise and am healthier than I was in the 90s, thanks to god and healthier eating. I only eat biblically clean foods, as God made these bodies and told us how to keep them healthier! Shellfish and Pork will shorten your life and make you sick! They are as bas for you as eating a buzzard! I grew up on them, until I learned better. I can get pork and Shrimp, oysters, crabs, crawfish, catfish, etc, for FREE, but won't touch it!! I also do not buy any food I don't grow myself from outside the US and am against GMO foods!!
