"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Quote:
The ISA Browns are a hybrid sex link chicken. They are usually got by breeding a Rhode Island Red Rooster
to a Rhode Island White hen. They are about the same as your cinnamon queens, and golden sex links.
Actually I guess you could say they are not even pure coming from the factory since they are
a hybrid but they are some very good layers. When you breed an ISA rooster to an ISA you will not
get an ISA Brown from that breeding.

I finally got internet/cable back! That was the worst storm I've ever been in. The lightning was like a strobe light until very late, and tornado warnings on TWC were very close. Phew, what a wild ride.

That coop came together very well. I love it.

Twiley, did you train the chicks at all, or do they just discover the waterer on their own? Chicks sure can drink and waste a lot of water (just found that out in the last couple of days ) Also, which are the Sussex? I'm seeing white, black , and brown.

Good stuff, everyone.

Pete, sounds like you really had some nasty weather!

The chicks started using the drinkers within a couple hours of installation. I left their original waterer in as a backup, but by the next day they were pretty much all drinking from the nipples. I left their original drinkers in for one additional day and then removed it leaving only the nipple waterers. It works great. A couple things I'd do differently is use a longer pipe, and add more nipples. What I had read before was that once the nipples are ready, it is recommended to remove the waterers at night so that when they get up in the morning they'd use the nipple waterers.

All of the chicks, except for three, are Sussex. The black ones are Silver Sussex, the orange ones are Buff Sussex, and the white ones are either Light Sussex or Coronation Sussex. On the whites I'll have to wait about three weeks for their color to appear to see if they are Light or Coronation. All of Light Sussex will be split to Coronation, so bred together they'll produce both Light Sussex and Coronation Sussex.

I thought you only had Coronation and light.

I have officially narrowed down the breeds I want to keep (yeah, right) to Coronation Sussex, BCM, and EEs (Perhaps some OE from the BCM and EEs as well). Along with geese, and WH ducks. Let's see how long this list stays together

I'm planning to build a larger brooder this weekend, and may copy your design. it would go over my worm beds just right, and the waterer would sure make things easier.

If you copy the design on my brooder you need to add legs under the boxed-in part because the weight of the box tips the cage over. That's why I have the straps holding it. The covered area works great though. The little chicks like going in and out of the box.

Yeah; I narrowed my breeds down too -- I don't raise bantams and silkies -- anything else is fair game

My husband and I started out wanting a few hens for fresh eggs; however, with me, once Pandora's Box was opened that was it.

Well, with the Coronations -- darn if that Chicken Math didn't kick in again.

This spring, I ordered 15 Silver Sussex chicks, and then I hatched 10 out of 12 Buff Sussex eggs that I bought online.

So, now I have Silver, Buff, Coronation, and Light (split) Sussex. All of my Sussex are Greenfire Farms bloodlines.

That's the funniest thing I've read here, Twiley.

problem: we have 2 coops ...Buff Orp.s with roo RIRs with roo...can I take out roos (put in seperate pens) then let ALL hens free range at the same time....will they get along? do not need any more fertile eggs right now... help,.....G will they return to THEIR own pens at night?

Hope everyone made it through the storms.

Someone mentioned hatching Welsummers? I want 2 Welsummer hens. Would you want to hatch a few extras and sell them?

Quote:
Yes; you can do that. The hens may or may not return to their coop in the evening. You can train them to go into their coop. In the evening just coax them into the coop, or catch them and put them in the coop. Eventually, they will all return to their coop each evening. Another thing you can do late in the afternoon is feed them something to get them in the coop and then shut them in.
