"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Unfortunately, I let my DH name him. He wanted "PEE-WEE".... but I griped and HELL NO! No pervert pee wee herman in my yard! So, Doug named him JUNIOR...not really my choice, but it responds to it. He is about 6 months old now, and weighs about 75 pounds. Read it takes them 2 years to be fully grown, he is the size of our Rottweiller (who died) at this time, but his parents head brushed above my hip bone when I met them, and I am 5'9". So he will be HUGE!!!!
But he is the sweetest thing! JUST NOW started taking treats from our hands...always waited until we put them down...he fights the chickens every day to keep them out of his food. When young, he ate 23 chicks though... got confused who to watch..the grown free ranging chickens or the babies who weren't brave enough to leave the coop area...so he eliminated the confusion. But, as soon as i put the chicks by age in separate metal dog kennels in different spots around the yard, all was fine. Then he is an egg sucker...if he finds an egg he will eat it. So I had to block off the coop entrance, but other than that he is absolutely the best decision we have made. Still haven't seen him take a crap, he goes to the woods, which is great!
This breed has the height, but not the muscle mass, so they are more like a really fuzzy greyhound. Three layers of fur to maintain skin protection - when we washed him, the water never made it to his skin! and we scrubbed! Then the two layers of skin that are for maintaining body warmth and then cools them off as well in the summers. Great dogs. Super awesome, like a collie with the kids too. We haven't seen stray dogs, coons, snakes, hawks, or even foxes since he turned 4 months old!

Hmmm...always intrigued by the breed, just didn't know too much about them. I'll have to add him to my "future dog list". I LOVE big dogs. Currently have a catahoula mix (rescue), boxer/lab mix (dumped dog), catahoula (full). AND, a feed bill that's impressive!!

Jipus5's if I am offensive to you, tap on my avatar, and block me. [SIZE4]I will go shadow to you[/SIZE4]. You will not see any of my posts after that. I will no longer offend you. My mother blood line and my geographic location will no longer affect you.

When I drove a truck had the option to turn off my CB. The anger of men at a woman taking their jobs was incredible. I kept telling them, I will marry you ASAP, I will not work, you support me and my grand kids. I will be happy as a pup under a wagon on a hot day. I never had envy takers. No one wanted to support me. For some reason they didn't want me on welfare ether. So I dove a truck across country.

I was working as an Autocad civil draftsman, I was pain $10.00 an hour. The entry legal out of school kid they hired was paid $22.00 an hour. I had 4 years experience, board drafting of 20 + years. Skilled in Architectural, civil and mechanical, member of Architectural Institute. At that point I fealt I needed to do something else. No one cares if you are man, woman, or Hermaphrodite, they want their freight picked up and delivered on time and in good shape. Trucking was my option.

Bad thing about a Donkey is they will eat al the grass your chickens want to be eating!  Then jealousy would arise!  LOL  I would recommend a Great Pyrenees dog instead.  They scare away foxes and other predators by 4 months of age, crap in the woods or away from your home at least, and they are able to be left outside...especially in Louisiana.  Bred for the Pyrennes mountains so our weather here doesn't bother them at all.  Last week, mine was sleeping in the middle of the yard, no tree cover, while it was sleeting....all over him!  Sweet teddy bear animals...great with the kids too.  Plus wont eat your grass!
. I totally agree, Donkey or dog, kids and budget, it is what you want. Both have vet and food, with donkeys hoof care. You do it, if you have horses, what is one more.

When I make the move I am plaining on a dog. When I get there I will be leaving it up to God, the breed that is right for me. Even to were I live when I make my move. I do all the work and let him guide me. It is not easy to hear his answers. Sometime it is years before I figure out he lead me were I needed to be.

Great Perines, Australian Cattle Dog, American Bull Dog, and Alsatian are at the top.

I have had to eliminate some breeds. Ridgeback, to high energy, needs to hunt to be happy. If I found a life partner with adult kids and grand kids, maybe. It would be the extended family dog and hunter. Great Danes?..... Caesar, (175# of muscle) caught coyotes and foxes, brought them home un hurt, but wet. :th Try to bring them inside to play with. Excuse me! In the house! Good part you could not find a coyote or fox with in 1 days Great Dane travel distance. Lunda couldn't care less and Willy and average size Dane never figured out about lifting a leg. What's up with that? ::he

:hit I lost these two and three of the chicks today to a hawk. The hen was my head hen and only broody. The rooster was my only one. They were my favorites and the chicks I lost were the grey ones (theirs). This was the first time I have seen a hawk around here in years. The rooster fought bravely to get everyone else to a hiding spot. The Hen took her chicks to the only place she could, under an upside down wheel barrel. The hawk went under there and killed her then three chicks. I got the other three by time it returned. It snapped the necks of all of them and didn't even try to eat them. It looked like it was doing it for sport.
That just totally breaks my heart!! So so sad. It made me go set my trap again. Chicken killers are not tolerated.

I so sorry!!! Why is it always the favorites? I know how much you loved those two. It's so hard when it's the ones that have become pets. My prayers will be for you. Pam

Because some people may not like me on this sites putting in my 2 cents. This is one of the reasons I have decided on LA to make my last home, to die on its soil.

Memory: a long time ago, my husband and I drove over the road, as it turned out he hatted the way of life. We only drove 3 1/2 years. We was broke down east bound. We had made it to a rest area before Baton Rouge. A couple pick ups stopped to see if they could help. They were full of family's of people, each truck had trash cans stuffed in the meddle of the humanity full of still live cat fish, crawfish and very very fresh shrimp, burlap bags of oysters, blue crabs, corn and potato's. Other Cars and pickups passed, honking their horns. I5 was the early 80's, no cell phones, the rest area was dry land, that was it. They were going to a party, don't remember what it was for or even if they needed a reason to party, it might have been a church group. The man that spoke to my husband I am sure was Creole or/and Cajun. We sat there for hours, not unusual in those days. A car pulled up while we were waiting, with paper plates of food, the cat fish did not need any sauces it was so good. There was a little of everything, some of it was really hot. I could eat hot then but it was to hot for me. They told me one of them went into a phone and help would be coming, but they were worried we would starve waiting.

This is the way I picture south Louisiana, I have met very few that were not that way of leaning. People that would be worried a stranger would go hungry. You know it is not easy to do what they did for us, a lot of effort went into it. I no longer remember how easy or not to come from the east then turn around to get the food to us.

I have confidence I will meet people, make friends, when I am old my faith tells me, any animals I have will not suffer. There will be angles that will sweep in and wisk my chicken, dogs, and any other creature in my care to their homes were they will be loved as I loved them. And when/if camp freezer is in their future they will be humanly dispatched after a happy life. ( :drool And taste good).

PS: it dose not surprise me to hear of people offering their chicks to someone that suffered a tragedy. It only confers what I believe.
