"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I was watching the news last night and they were talking about possible flooding. They mentioned St. Landry Parish and that is where I live. I always get nervous when I hear bad weather brewing.

I am having panic attacks, anxiety attacks and my blood pressure has shot through the roof. Now I'm worried about all of my animals. If there is any flooding in my area, I think the chickens, turkeys and rabbits will be ok. That is one reason I had raised coops builts and installed the hanging feeders and wateres. The chickens should be ok because they will be 2 - 4 feet off of the ground. I would only have to take with me my peafowl, sheep and goats. I hope that the waterfowl would be ok.

Anyone else worried about possible flooding?

I have a friend that comes over to "do the deed". After the deed is done, I pluck, clean and cut myself. It's time consuming but it's worth it. We did about 12 roosters one weekend and it took all day long.

I don't know of any place in the Lafayette area that processes. I will try to search around today and post it for you.

You live in Lafayette?

Well, I called all of the slaughter houses within 30 miles of you and none of them process chickens. They told me that it will be extremely hard to find any slaughter house that process chickens. They said that it's not worth the time and money to pluck chickens.

I don't know of anyone in your area that processes chickens at their home. If you are looking for someone to process your chickens, you may try placing an ad on Craigslist and see what you get.

If you watch CL's there is a lady in Jackson that sells them all the time!!

She has Lavender Orpingtons, not blue. I just bought 35 Lavender hatching eggs from her...now anxiously awaiting 21 days!

If anyone has Blue Orpingtons, Blue Laced Red or Silver Laced Wyandottes...I am in the market for those!

I'll have Blue Orps next year, mine just turned 4 months & are not even laying good -- sure are impressive birds though, very big & beautiful!

We should be OK here. the Red River here has crested & is now down about 2 feet. They are even saying they are still having the dragon boat races on Saturday. We live on high ground & the bayou in back of our land only came over the banks in 1927. They are saying here that if you flooded in 1973 expect to do so again (but we didn't).

Julie if you need to you can put your peas back in with mine -- they'll be a bit crowded but safe & our boys aren't old enough to fight I don't think.

For your sheep & goats why don't you call the LSU Ag Center & ask if they are going to have the big evacuation facility open down by LSUA? that's part of why they built the thing, so they may have it open for people's animals. Also, the livestock barns out at the Alexandria Coliseum may be open -- they took pets during the last hurricane evacuation & also livestock in that area.

{{{Hugs to you, please don't panic! we're here to help any way we can & we will}}}}

Thanks for the offer to put the peas up. I appreciate that. If we get flooded, I may have to give you call. Thanks for the info about LSU Ag Center. I will try calling them now. I always have panic attacks during Hurricane season, so this is not helping me at all with all of this talk about flooding.

Let's pray that nothing happens.

Thanks again Terri.

Swampwood? How are you doing? Are you ok? I know that you live in Krotz Springs. Please keep us posted. Do you have somewhere to house your animals in case you have to evacuate?

Yes Julie, those are the same type of dragon boats! this is the first time we've had them here. It's a fund raiser for the art museum.

I definitely want to try them if they do this again next year! It looks like so much fun!

You call me if you need me.

KuntryGirl, I have weather anxiety too. I am sorry you are going through this. We had massive damage during Gustavo and storms make me crazy. You will all get to see my crazy this summer when there are storms headed for the Gulf.
