"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Adorable! Oh my goodness I feel chick fever again!
Got 65 quail Yesterday. 45 are A&M, 12 Manchurian, and 8 Brown. The breeder told me how messy they were so I was thinking they were like broilers and put them in the broiler brooder. I was really wrong! They are much worse then broilers so I had to pull out one of the old industrial brooders from the barn (too cold out there to leave it there, I'd have to check every 5 min to make sure). Has anyone ever used one of those before? The bar across the top is warming along with the light but the light keeps flicking on and off and I don't understand why (first time with this thing). The heat is staying on and holding a good temp. I lost one of the A&M's last night to drowning in a quail waterer. I have another one that was given to me free that seems to have crook neck and is about half the size of the rest. I got her not only because she is a she, but also because she is the strongest, fastest, and most ample eater there is. She shoves everyone else out of the way to get what she wants whether it is food, water, or heat. These were taken within a minute of putting them in this brooder...see the mess already? At least this one has a wire floor.... Because of playing swap a roo with them and my normal cleaning schedule I had to put the chicken chicks in a bathtub for about an hour. This picture was taken right after I put them in there. They keep their brooder pretty well clean but make a mess in a bathtub. I blame the mess on the Polish! They figured out scratching outside the first week and now if supplied with a feeder without a top they go scratching away. I lost one of the Molted Java last night and don't know why (hatchery chicks), so that leaves me with 5 out of 6 of them. It wasn't cold, not squished, acted normal up until it flipped over and died (yes, I mean back flip). The rest I got from Bugglesmommy. Look at her 2 polish staring at the camera! I have to build a better grow out pen for them to move outside. The one I have is for extreme heat not cold and they are too small to be dealing with this weather without heat. While doing all this I broke 3 heat lamp bulbs and need another heat lamp base. My big girls needed heat last night because once again they were wet from the rain. Every bulb was because I unplugged the lamp and put it somewhere that got knocked over by my butt. At least they weren't plugged in at the time! Did you know the quail make the prettiest calls to each other? I found that out last night. Pretty speckled eggs here I come!

Hey folks, my friend (and bigger bird addict than me!) asked if I could help her find new homes for two royal palm Tom turkeys. She'd like to get about $25 each for them. They are just coming to breeding age and she has too many toms. If she doesn't sell them they'll have tho to freezer camp and shed rather not do that. They are pretty sweet(follows her like a dog) but they are tearing up the few hens has. If anyone is interested her email is...Joyce. zmek@gmail. com (take out the spaces)

Here is a pic of the boys...
They are quite stunning! Wish I could but mine fully free range, I dont have a pen at all or I would snatch them up! Glad to see another northerner on here, Come back often. We are a lively bunch!
What kinds of birds do you have??

And Angel, I LOVE the monkey diapers?!!!
And chicks peeping out of a hens feathers is one of my all time favorite things to see!!! So sweet! Blue is the QUEEN of the Adoption mothers!!!

I'm technically a Texan (g) (an hour from Shreveport) I have pekin ducks, Cayuga's, welsh harlequins (well down to one but I've got eggs coming for more) and just added magpies. (The Pekins were my first ducks.. But I don't plan to breed them.. The others I do.)
I also have some barnyard mix and hatchery chickens but got some lav and blue amerucana's from a breeder.

My friend that I posted for has jersey giants, assorted bantams, ee's, a couple amerucana's, the royal palm turkeys and and eastern brown turkey (I think that's the right one)

That is cool. Im outside of Minden. Wish I had a Jersey Giant roo that's for sure, just takes em so long to grow! I mix my breeds, wonder is mixing a Jersey Giant with a Black Cornish would alow a huge chicken that grows faster... I have found most of mine grow as fast as the hen does... an experiment for the future!

CONTACT OUT STATE LEGISLATOR IN SUPPORT OF THIS
http://www.legis.la.gov/legis/FindMyLegislators.aspx
TYPE IN YOUR ADDRESS AND REPRESENTATIVES TO CONTACT WILL COME UP. BE REALLY GOOD TO SUPPORT THIS, I READ THE WHOLE THING, AND IT SOUNDS GOOD, REAL GOOD. OUR RIGHT TO CHOOSE, VISUALLY INSPECT ALL FARMSW PROVIDING THIS MILK UPON PICK UP IF THE WANT EXISTS, LICENSING WHICH WOULD REQUIRE CLEANLINESS TESTING, ETC. EXACTLY WHAT WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR...

I have now sent an email to each of our states representatives, senators, and congressmen asking them to encourage our ability and right to obtain the more natural foods our families should have the right to have the choice of obtaining. As well as encouraging a more natural way of life, the success of more Louisiana farmers, and the ability to make homemade cheese and butter as well. I listed a lot of things. Felt good to be proactive... real good. May write them again and again and again. Oh and Fleming vetoed Louisiana again on the use of medical marijuana for the pain of cancer sufferers. Goodness.

All the support that can be given really helps. Arizona has a bill up stating No town or community can forbid chicks in the state of AZ. Everyone on AZ BYC wrote in our support, those that could go to discussions went. We also spread the word asking friends and family to let themselves be heard. It past the first part with a 29:1 vote. You can do it. :thumbsup
