"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Have you checked Tractor Supply or a feed store. I ordered from Meyers for my 1st batch. Check on Monroe's Craiglist and see if anybody is selling. Do a little research in your area. Go on Craiglist and ask is someone selling chicks. You'll get some answers I'll bet. Keep us informed.

Anybody else out there got any advice for dmgodard?

NOTE: DO NOT BUY BANTAMS FROM TSC THIS YEAR. Myself and many others are seeing some sort of sudden death causing illness in TSC chicks and chicks exposed to them.

Help!! Got a chick that is all of a sudden unable to bear her weight on her right leg. It is swollen at the area that would be an ankle if she had human anatomy. She hasnt been dropped. The only time she is handled is once a day butt cleanings/checks for everyone. She was fine at noon. What should I do!!???

I've never had that, but have heard some say they soak it in warm Epson salts. If it doesn't seem broken. Wierd, but on Dr. Pol last night, the vet taped the foot in a folded proper position to the chick and recommended separating it. Put it in a box with a towel with food and water in reach. DEFINATELY keep separate anyway bec the others pick on and even kill an injured one, so whether you tape or not, separate it.

There's been a high death rate frol some TS's this season. I think someone said that TS's with the high death rate were getting their chicks from a hatchery out of New Mexico.

I put her in a rubbermaid tote with water and food on one side and warm dish towels on the other. For some unknown reason, i put a blanket doll in the brooding pen just in case i had to seperate someone bc 1) it would be warm 2) it would be familiar to the chick. I out it in there before the warm towels...she snuggled up to it and buried herself. I have a heating pad under one side if the tote. Anything else I am missing?

Can she walk to get to the food and water? You can actually put some of the food near her not in a bowl. She will need to reach the water. Let us know how's she doing. Does it appear broken or just swollen? Being warm is very critical. A heating pad under the tote may or may not create enough warmth. May need to put it inside covered with a towel on low. When they're little they hang out under their mom. Getting cold or being in a draft can be fatal. I hope she is okay. If she's cold she may not leave the warm spot, so closer food and water might be good. One other thing, a smaller water dish might be wise. Since she's injured you wouldn't want her to fall in and drown. Good job! It's sad when they die, but the bond when you save one is very neat. I have one like that.

I have the heating pad wrapped in a towel. The dish looks big in the pic but is actually very small...but she stays on the heating pad or under the blanket baby bc I can't keep her warm enough. I am at work and guess who is under my desk?? lol I have to see patients all morning but I can run in and out of my office and at least offer her water if I can get her warmed up enough. ALso, my husband is going to run by after his meetings and bring her to our vet to check it out! Yes, that's me...pay $5 for a baby chick and spend $200 on vet bills! haha!

also we have a warmer at work that is used for seeds but we use it to heat our solutions...when I finish with procedures in that room, I may just put her on that!
Honey, I don't want to offend you, but don't waste your money on vet bills. Soak in epson salts and see if it heals. Or not. There is always going to be accidents or illnesses and you'll go broke paying vet bills. Survival of the fittest.

Having a hard time making a decision.
My blue orpington (that's solid black) Lucy has sour crop again. I think she has pendulous crop and that is contributing to her problem. I've also decided that she can't have cabbage, as I think that's what created this problem again. My dilemma is: Do I treat her again for sour crop (monistat 3, etc)? Do I use something like a crop bra on her? Or, do I look a culling her? I don't ask that easily, as my 8 year old is attached. I just become unsure of quality of life, etc for her.

Treat her again like you did before. I have to look up the link but after the last time you dealt with this I found a medicine from some chicken expert that is supposed to break everything in there up and pass it threw. It is supposed to be really good from the reviews that I have read. I haven't tried it yet but it is worth a try if it helps her.
