"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

:welcome    Glad to have you.  We are a wild and crazy bunch.  Well, at least the southern part of the state is.   :lau    I, however, am from NW La.  Outside of Shreveport.  Nothing much wild here except the Boats and the racetrack.  I don't gamble because I NEVER win.   And I mean never.  So I don't.  But I love my chickens.

Finally found some Corid yesterday. My little mottled orpington has made it through to this morning! She still looks soooooo weak keeping her eyes closed and not moving much, but to lift her head. She won't eat or drink by herself so I have been going out there giving it to her by syringe. How long does it take to start working? Blood and runny poop. :(
Her buddy, my black orpington stays super close stall times. She is also getting Corid as a preventative.

I wanted to ask how y'all's feeding was set up? The black orpington likes to kick everything out and makes a super huge mess. I'm worried about mold and bugs. Can y'all give me some ideas?

Glad you found it! I hope they all pull through!

I feed fermented fed, no waste, no spilling (well sometimes *I* spill it :gig) and very beneficial.

If not ready for that route, raising the feeders up on a board or brick helps so the feed it slightly below beak level. Less spillage or cleaner spills/scratching.

I distract then too by putting a pan of sand for them to kick around to get the "chicken scratching" instinct away from the feeder lol.

They make feeders with guards on top but I dislike them after a bad CX meatie exp., layer chicks are calmer at dinner time so they probably were meant to be used with regular layers.

Glad they're hanging in there! I've never had to give Corid so don't know how long it takes to kick in. -- soon I hope!
My feeder is hung inside the coop from a chain - being off the ground keeps them from getting into it or on top of it or knocking it over.

We prefer to be called more colorful..Pam

This is why hardware cloth is important vs chicken wire. I use both. Chicken wire here is used as a tool to detect a breech before hardware cloth.

Here's some of the damage done by the loose dogs before my dog and I chased them off. Because of the location of the breech (back of rabbitry and under cage line I didn't see this hole from the inside :(

Their are feeders that prevent that. For now you can only give enough for them for the day. This will help your hen when she starts to eat. Go to fermented feed. Most like it better and wet feed is hard to scratch around . You have less waste because they like it better. You could also get the nipple type water system no more dirty water. You can get the nipples at TSC and put them in a water bottle instead of getting the expensive PVC set up. Pam

The VERY best idea I found on the forum is fermenting feed. Nothing like it. I bought a big bottle of Corid and haven't cracked it open yet.
