"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Well I have 6 different breeds of orpingtons jubilee buff blue red black and lavender so I am trying to make sure I have a Roo for each I hadn't thought about the back up thanks for that
I wish you good luck with your breeding! I would love to have a couple of pens of pure breds some day.

I have 2 buff Orpingtons pullets. I really enjoy their temperament.

I hope one of y'all could answer this question for me. My turkeys are outgrowing their pen, and I would like to move them into a pen on the ground. The pen currently houses a pair of bantams, but I would take them out. I know the turkeys have weak immune systems, so I was thinking maybe if I covered the dirt floor in several inches of pea gravel they would be okay? I get my gravel from a local store and it is bagged. Does anyone know if my turkeys could still get sick on it, or if it would protect them?

You don't have to have that many hens. Just the top 3 or so and the best roo. Each breed. I have a free book for you. One of the best EVER written for breeding.

The top breeders from the Plymouth Rock Thread said this is the best and methods are being used today. Good luck.

Isn't it sulpher you sprinkle on the bare dirt. Then add wood chips better than rocks. I'd research google. Decontamination of poultry pen. Never mind, I did it and it isn't sulpher, it's hydrated lime. Sprinkle good and add other on top.

Thanks! I'll look into the hydrated lime. The only reason I'm going with the rocks is because my area does not absorb water well at all, and I'm afraid if we get a heavy rainfall it would become a soggy mess.

Ok my la peeps I want to keep a few different breeds I want to breed pure lines together how many hens should I keep to one rooster
Most recommend keeping rooster to hen ratio @ 1:20 or 1:25 plus a spare on the side, a hen stays fertile several days ( 7 to 10 ) after being fertilized so a young rooster can cover up to or more than 50 hens, falling off with aging, personally, any # of hens less than 10, only have 1 rooster available to hens with the extra in another pen, rare breeds are more important to have a standby in another pen
