Buy some meal worms from ms magoo.[/QUOTE]Thanks. I did some reading on it and definately says it can be a protein issue. When I observed it it was so weird bec Lizzy was just standing there and one of the Black hens (not sure which one bec I can't tell from that angle) was what appeared to be EATING the feathers. I'm relieved there wasn't any wounds or fear. That could explain Prim, too bec her feathers were broken off without any injury. Dang! Just when you stabilize the chicken yard something else comes up. I am willing to get the bit (thanks for that cite Forgetful) but will try to load them with protein first. One suggestion was to buy feed with higher protein. I give them layer feed now and a cup of scratch. I think I'll toss them less scratch and bump up the protein. I don't think I over treat them, maybe one or two bananas for 5 chickens or some spinach or some grapes. I may need you to help me put the bit on if I have to go with that. Man!!!!!
Several of my chickens have broken tail feathers, on exam. i found no sign of injury nor signs of parasites, i started mixing chopped corn with my starter feed about 2 weeks ago, i beleve this caused a protein imbalance, so i took the mixed feed out and put straight feed in, it isn't all of my chicks and there is a couple roos that have broken tail heathers the intermediate feathers are normal and their but fuzz is all there, it hay be a mean rooster, going to be watching close, i found most of the missing feathers in the floor of the chicken house, that could be a sign of something going on behind closed doors so to speak.
They are over 13 weeks, they are almost grown in size, the younger chicks have all their feathersYour talking chicks prim was talking full grown hens. That's why I suggested meal worms. I have given a few where and their to chicks with no problems. My pet chicken is having a moving sale they have saddles , and supplements, among other things for sale with free shipping.
It's one thing to be outside in the shade, in at least some air movement versus being enclosed in a small, tight box. Freight planes are not heated or cooled in the cargo holds, nor are mail trucks. Hopefully they'll have a fast mail connection and get to you safely. The post office does try to take extra care with live animals.
