can coons climb chain link? I'm attempting to put up some type of roof today, praying it will work Thanks for the reply TopDog, I also am inclined to think coon. But **** it came during the day with us in the yard at the time. All the kitties were in and we found remains at a pond about 600 yards from the house :( By remains I only found a few feathers and a piece of cartiliage from either the breast or back bone at the pond with foot prints of a coon. While I was gone this am he got another EE, Im so arrrrghcussing.
Coons can climb fence like nobodies business!!! I have seen it in person after a HUGE coon broke out of the biggest cage we had just trapped it in. It saw us come out of the house and flipped out and bent the door and scaled the fence with lightening speed. Think cat being chased by a pack of dogs fast.

Sorry you have been losing chickens!

I would put hardware cloth around and over the whole pen, including the gate, top and sides, do not leave even the smallest of gaps in coverage.the preador sounds like a coon from experince, also set a live trap, could be a wild house cat,

This is good, that is how we did ours. We also have two roofs. One that was just a sun roof (we were unaware it wasn't waterproof) and then another to keep the water out (tent shaped! Not flat! We made that mistake!)

Hi everyone  I need some help solving a mystery. We have lost 7 birds to something so we keep trying to out think this critter, epic fail. This morning I went out to the tarp covered dog kennel and one of our WFBS was gone just a few feathers inside and outside the cage. The floor has patio stones no evidence of digging, tarp intact and in place. A few days ago we were processing some of our roos's when 2 eggers just disappeared right in daylight! :ep :rant During processing while we were outside, these are 5 almost 6 month old chickens, so not tiny! No marks/tracks to give us a clue but night before last we saw a coon and a skunk, but again no tracks! I dont' have any funds to put up camera my German Shepard hears nothing last night .... This is crazy I'm putting out Ammonia but its been so wet here I cant even smell it. I don't have a clue how to keep my birds safe we got the kennel and have not lost one ROOSTER who was in it until last night, whatever it is has been taking my Eggers right out from under my nose and I need some advice..... :idunno Please anyone ever have this type of experience?  I was getting ready for eggs, so sad and mad. We have 6 of 11 girls left with 4 roosters Cuckoo (maran, who was supposed to  be a hen), 2 WFBS, and 1 Blk/blue cochin left Stupid critter :tongue

Coon. If a coon can stick their hand in a cage they will pull the rest out piece by piece. Yes they do come out in the day if they are young. Or a mother with young to feed. And sick ones will be out in day light too. I'd get a live trap. If you don't have one sometime your local human society will loan them out bait with chicken. Use hardware cloth for coop and dig it down a foot under coop.

U must not have much experience with predictors. They can climb anything the only thing to stop coons is hardware cloth it's to small for them to get threw. Threw will continue to come back to your chickens are gone of you make it impossible for them to get to them. I have 2 GSD's. Coons can injure one dog in a fight and carry disease only 2 or more can kill an adult coon without getting an injury from them so I would use the live trap then you can dispose of them and you may have more than one so keep the trap out till it's empty for a week at least.

I built my nest box's today, forgot to take a photo to share, they turned out really well, will post photos tomorrow,2 rows of 5 with ledges to access the nests, the hens were checking them out before i could get them all put together, I was taking a break and heard a hen singing the egg laying song, i went and looked but no egg yet, it wont be long, checked a couple hens pelvic separation, about 2.5 fingers, it will be my luck they will start laying while i am offshore this hitch, got to leave out midnight Wed. All the rescue chicks are doing great, even Lefty is doing good, put more Blue Lotion on his right nub, the skin is still closeing around the end of the wing bone.
