"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

We are not handy at all, but I wanted to reuse some of the pipe from our melon trellis. I cemented it together and added chicken wire. There is a 2x4 under to keep it more stable. I made a cheap tractor. Only problem is that I didn't make a door and the pipes are cemented. I couldn't get the girls inside at all! Siggghhhhh

I finally got all the stuff to set up my mosquito zapper. Then I thought: it's so late in the year, why bother. Then I get outside in the daytime, in the sun and got so bitten by Mosquitos. I'm thinking of setting it up anyway.

My new little chicken, RIR named Rue, is fitting in so well. Thanks again Angel. So far not really making friends with Prim, Prim may be too far gone with being nasty. Rue decided she wanted to run the chicken yard, a fiesty little thing, but Salena, my big black Sex Link, put her in her place. Didn't draw blood, but no gentle. Since then Rue stays one perch below the others and at treat time grabs a big piece and runs. I really like her spirit. Yesterday she was determined to get in the nest box with the boss hen. Everytime she tried she was pecked, but she kept trying. There were 2 other empty boxes. Lol.

Hey everyone...been a long time since I've checked in but I'm faithfully reading posts! My daughter, who's a sophomore in high school has me running in circles at the moment...just call me "the chauffeur". Lol. Anyway all ten of my girls are laying now and a few days ago I had my first 10 egg day. My neighbor are enjoying our bounty ;). This cooler weather has been such a nice break for me AND the girls. I love not having to stress about whether they are heat stressed!

My 8 RIRs are progressing nicely to THE day when the first egg arrives. "We" are at week 16, and counting, eating lots of good non-GMO, non-soy grower food.

Feather development and colors are beautiful.

I knew from the tons of comments here of how much fun folks have with their chickens, that I wouldn't be disappointed with mine. Each morning my little buddy Max and I go to the coop to give them their breakfast, and then to let them out to roam. Here's a pic of Max watching them eat breakfast. Max and I repeat the routine at supper time before I lock them up for the night. Great motivation to get an old man going, when sometimes the body resists.

Max has been fascinated with them since the first day. Don't know what's going on in his head, but I suspect that he'd really like to chase them, as he has attempted to do on multiple occasions. But, after multiple warnings, most of the time he settles down and just watches. Nevertheless, he remains really excited being there, quivering and occasionally whining.

I have read that Rhode Island Reds can be a little aggressive, especially the roosters (we have none), but I never expected much from the hens. However, in the last two weeks one or two of the girls have been assuming an aggressive posture toward Max - ruffling up their feathers holding their head high, neck arched and strutting toward him. At first, I warned him about not hurting them, and shooed them away. But, this morning at least two of them went too far, and I told him to go ahead and “get em”, REALLY hoping that no injuries would result! Well, it was a standoff! He would advance toward one that was threatening him the most with his mouth open like he was gonna bite her, and she didn't back down! I didn’t let the “encounter” last long, I called him over to me, and the girls strutted off into the trees looking like they showed him whose boss!

Speaking of trees, I'm blessed to have a perfect area in the back of our lot where I built their coop. Right next to the coop is a fairly dense stand of trees, and in front of the coop is a grassy area. So they have their pick. Right now they spend most of their time foraging under the trees. But, I suspect as the days grow cooler that they'll want to venture more onto the grassy area.

Hi all, not much happening around here. I've got my Swedish Flower Hens in the 'bator. Day 3 and I turned on the turner. Still have all the chickens. I haven't gotten them listed on CL yet. So I feed the regular 3 coops and 2 small makeshift coops and then go inside the storeroom to put out food for my few day old 2 Barred Rocks. They are so skittish, hate for me to hold them and try to fly out constantly. I think they must be males.
