I guess the run areas should be covered for shade and protection from rain? I'm planning my chickencoops now -- please share your experience with the run areas.
Well, this is the first year I covered it, I let them free range dawn till dusk last summer so I never worried about it before. Since my coop is just 3 sided and the roof hangs over it gave them about 8x16 of shade. I just didn't feel that it was enough shade for them. And they were panting so bad. I think this is going to really help out. I won't keep the tarp on once it gets cooler outside. Now with that being said, when I build my new coop & runs I will make sure I give them lots of shade but will still leave the majority of the run uncovered! Mine love to scratch around in the wet dirt!!
I also was reading some posts not to long ago about vining plants on the run. One person said they have grapes on their's and said it works great for shade and the chickens love to jump up to get grapes plus she said there's still plenty on the outside to harvest. I LOVED the idea and think I might have to try it.
Good luck with your building plans! What kinds of ideas are you throwing around?? Did you see the 4 section coop & run I posted a few days ago?? Since you have so many breeds something like that would work great also!!
