"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I'm trying to find some buff Orpington bantams to raise. Eggs to hatch or chicks. Would consider another breed, but am set on bantams. Near Baton Rouge, LA. Thanks in advance!

So you mean if it's too high at lockdown? I thought that happened if the humidity was too high the whole time.

I woke up to an egg that looks like this:

Anyone ever have this happen?

Not good! I'd get that out as soon as possible; if that explodes it'll contaminate everything else in there. & take it out very carefully, too!
Mostly I meant if humidity is too high the entire time, BUT I had 2 hatches when I first started learning how that, I put the humidity up into the 60s at hatch & then it spiked even higher & both times I lost several chicks which were perfectly formed & some even pipped - they had drowned in the shells. I think it was the humidity being too high that did that & everything I researched & read seemed to indicate the same thing.
Also, ever since then, if one pips & it doesn't start to come out in 12 hrs, I assist it. I've lost some; I've saved some who grew up to be perfectly normal, so I take the chance & gamble that I might save it.

Hope you find some!

Out of curiosity, do any of y'all candle for internal pips? I was planning to follow the advice on that one article and not open the incubator until the hatch is finished. But I've heard of other people candling during the hatching.

Also, vent plugs: the article I was following said to leave them open through day 18, then close one, and to close the second on day 20. I was also told that this was a terrible idea.

Thoughts?

The article I'm talking about: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-incubate-hatch-eggs-using-the-dry-incubation-method

candling for internal pips is a good idea...just remember when you open that incubator the humidity will drop quick....I hatched out of my coolerbator at over 50 percent hatch rate not to bad for my second time...I noticed that I could control the humidity quite fast...I kept the humidity around 50-65 percent....you can open the incubator as many times as you want...just remove the egg candle it and move it back in quick..i seen one of my late hatchers internal pip and that was after 21 days...many people candle and weigh each egg during the whole process of incubation so they get more efficient at their hatch rates...I was taking the eggs out all the time...I even took out the whole egg tray and candled after day 14...I leave my eggs until day 15 and then candle...and for vent plugs I have no vent holes with plugs...in the coolerbator there is 1/4 holes...six of them at the bottom..and they stay open the whole time...if your opening and closing the incubator then its getting plenty of air.....and as for hatching I would set them on their sides and not straight up and down I took mine out of the rack and layed them down on the bottom of the incubator...I read that I helps the chick hatch a hour or two early....then if they would hatch straight up and down....and my guess with you egg that has excreted something out of it....is that it is no good...and I would remove it right away and do your own eggtopsy on it....you could pass bad bacteria by leaving it in there...I also read when you take the non hatching eggs apart there will be a build up in pressure and some might explode so be careful....I sat mine out for an hour and took them apart....I did have one that was malpositioned that internally piped but didn't make it out...well hope this helps.....every place is different....I would try to hatches...a dry hatch and wet hatch...serveral times a year to see your success....most people don't realize that the area around the incubator has a big influence on the hatch as well...my incubator was six feet from the fireplace which was burning at 500-600 degrees....sitting on the floor...and the temp stayed solid at 99-100....and as for humidity I kept mine at 45-50 during the beginning and at the end increased to 50-65..if It got to high in humidity I could just open the top for five seconds and it would bring the humidity down 5-10 percent...
here are some pics of the hatch

bottom left white bird....is quazi...he was born with one eye and a beak that wasn't straight..he still is doing fine..i feel so bad for him

all together 16 birds and gave three to a fellow byc user for free...had to give back to the people for all the information I have gotten from byc

I got it out. It's on the porch, because of the smell. Maybe it was too long and narrow?

Edit to add: we eggtopsied it and I don't think it was close. I think it gave up several days ago. Lots of gross liquid, black floaty things, and a poker-chip-sized pink chick.

Check out the Bantam Orpingtons USA page on Facebook. We were looking for some for my daughter, but haven't seen any buffs pop up. But that is where I would ask. There is a breeder in south Louisiana that had a lot of nice colors. She might know. I think she is admin in that group.

u want to make sure you use just perfect eggs....not to small not to big...not to long not to short.....everything makes a difference...my birds have been laying weird shaped eggs like that one since I started to worm them...so my guess once the meds go thru them and clear then they will return to normal...I cant wait...until I can put another batch in and hope for the best...making the second coolerbator and now got a second fridge for my fridgebator....so im super busy...just got done cleaning out the chicken and pheasant pens and putting new bedding in

you discribe my hatch Terri, i drowned half of them in the shell, i will bring my humidity to55% thishatch and watch for a spike and be ready to vent until back to 55.

Maybe the lady you got the eggs from gave you old eggs.
