so sorry to hear that happened....well if you ever need eggs I will send you some just pay for shipping they will be a barnyard mix....just keep in mind everyone you wanna have these materials on hand so when something like this happens you are prepared...I never thought my birds would just randomly get sick and I didn't keep anything on hand...but luckily I own a hydroponics shop right at my home...so I got a 60 ml nutrient syringe and aquarium line and thanks to byc they coached me along....a lot of it is how quick you get to them cause chickens dont really show pain and if you don't get to them right then and there its normally to late....if you see one that looks like its not normal separate them and give them access to feed and water with warm place to be...this will give you better access and viewing to monitor the bird....I was fortunate enough to get the bird in and get treated asap....im not sure about the coke either...when this happened to me I didn't know what to do or even how to tube feed.....so I made a make shift one and luckily it worked...it is a two person job until you get used to it....hope this helps for future situations

Thanks to you and Birdman. I have syringes and other supplies, just not the catheter. I will get it today. Last night Jeff put his finger on what happened, I'm pretty sure. It really wasn't sour crop, I have successfully nursed one through that. She only had bad breath for a few hours and not before or after that. I gave them a chicken carcass before this happened. I think Jeff was right that it was a bone sliver. She thew up more than sour crop and the throw up appeared to have blood in it. Once Jeff said that it all made sense. I will never give them a carcass again. So preventable. I feel so bad that she could still be alive.

I just didn't know, but I know now. Birdman, thanks for your offer of eggs, I have 5 others, so I'll have plenty of eggs. I am still thinking about whether I will replace her or not. When I built the new coop, I built it for 6 to roost, but they are most comfortable with 5. The two Americaunas have been doing into an overflow coop at night, they stick together and are a little more timid than the others, but I'm hoping they'll go in the big coop now. If not, I would like to have a baby fluffy butt to hand raise to be tame. Each one of my chickens, bunnies, dogs and cat are my babies and to lose one is heart breaking. At least I was holding her and petting her and talking to her when she died. I kept some of her feathers. This was my first chicken loss.

Prim, I hope you don't mind me asking.  But all this about you loosing her and the suggestions that were given to help you has given me much to think about.  And I don't know what I would do if I lost on of my favorite chickens.  I don't know what I would do with the body.  :(

I bury my pets.

So sorry Prim :( But I am glad you can have the love of the other 5 ladies to help comfort you. It is so hard when we can't make it all better. Cody I can over share lol, check out all my baby chick pictures coop pictures etc., since my family does the eye roll tune out with any conversation that starts with chicken lol. Here's to all of us having happy hatches and renewal of life!

I understand. Most people don't understand about the love of chickens. I love them like I live my dogs. I told my daughter that no matter how much I cry when I lose one, I still choose to live animals than not to.

I would say that its better to not handle the birds when they are sick unless giving treatment...Monitoring is the key during the situation like this
