"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

At that age the roo would grab it and run trying to eat it before someone grabs it. The neck feathers of the roo's are thin and pointy. It's harder to tell on mixed breeds this young. But look closely at how they hold their feathers females a normally longer than the roos. you will notice that half are one way etc. take notes it helps as you get more expercence. And if you forget something you have your notes for the future.

Thanks Pam! I don't know why I didn't do that already. When I was in school and working for newspapers I was constantly recording EVERYTHING. Sometimes I wonder if my memory has always been bad, but I just didn't notice it then because of the notes...

I'm starting to collect eggs for another sussex hatch. I've had fair-to-middlin' success with them, and assumed it was just me. But I'm hearing from others now that they haven't had good luck with my eggs, either. So I've stopped selling them and I'm going to hatch instead, to see if I can tweak my process for a better rate.

I've noticed that they seem prone to pipping at the wrong end, which seems like they're too big to turn in the shell. So I'm going to hand turn this time, to see if that helps, and also let them hatch lying down.

They also seem to have a tendency to get glued or shrink wrapped, so I'm going to raise the humidity a bit, to about 45%. I usually run 30-35%.

I'm hoping that maybe they're just picky, like marans or seramas, or other picky breeds. But I bought that new roo chick when I started hearing about the problems, just in case.

I ran into someone this weekend looking for them so their is a market. Check to see if FB or BYC has a sussex page they might have tips. I normally don't lose chicks but the light sussex gave me a hard time so i'm thinking like you. Their picky now to find out what makes them easier to raise. Pam

Hello Ron,
I know , of course what BYC stands for but what is FB, please? I tell you what, get yourself a good Silkie hen or two, turn them on to broody and you don't have to worry about any of those particulars just mentioned. Along about day 18 and for two more days you might take an ironing board spray bottle and give the nest a light spray of H20 when the hen leaves the nest to feed and whatnot. "Excuse please" as Charlie Chan used to say, "Have to go whatnot myself". There are other things in the world beside the chicken addiction, bills and whatnot.
Sincerely,
Neal, the Zooman

I'm members of those pages, but I feel like Cody in the biele thread when I ask questions: either ignored, or given a very vague, general answer.

I don't have any problems once they hatch, and they're pretty vigorous chicks. But it's getting them out of the egg that is a challenge.

I've got a nice looking young cockerel available, if you run into anyone else looking for one. His feathers are coming in so rich and dark. 5 weeks old. I've listed him on fb a few times, but no interest. So I'm going to wait until he loses the white chest feathers to list him again.

I bought chicks didn't hatch eggs. Silky isn't a breed I wish to have. I know others do tho. Pam

I thought about giving your info but they were looking local. I don't know how far you are from slidell. I can get a message to them my neighbor knows them but they want more than a roo. Pam
