"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'll definitely research them since you suggested :)  I'm not crazy about the CX for eating. There's way too much white meat for me. Right now my freezer is full, 30-40 birds.

Looks like I'll be culling more Biele cockerels maybe next week. I learned the sprigs on the combs are a defect and a disqualification when showing APA recognized breeds.
This info at least gives me a direction to work in for breeding and how to pick the culls for now. The majority of the pullets have them and I think all but 4 of the cockerels do also.
I won't cull the pullets for eggs sake but these excess boys have to go.

Everyone have a great 4th of July!!!  And please stay safe on the roads today.

None of my hens or poulets have it. None of the roos from my rooster have it either. It will be curious to see if the ones I bought direct have them. Did and roosters from my eggs that you hatched have it?
I was reading about legbars and genitics and someone said they were undesirable. I didn't know they had them either mine is the frist chicken,my biefelder the first I've ever I've seen. Pam

Pam out of your eggs that hatched there were 3 pullets and 4 cockerels. 2 of the pullets have the sprigs. I'm not sure about the third, I couldn't spot them all together this morning. 2 out of the 4 cockerels have the sprigs also. The best looking male with a clean comb was one of the birds that died. The other one with a clean comb will be held for breeding.

One of my pullets laid her first egg today.

What a surprise! It was on the ground in the run. I put it in the nest box to try and give them the hint.

I have a mixed flock :) I have RIR, BR, White Leghorn, Brahma and orpington. Oldest ones are the RIR and WL. They are about 16-17 wks. The younger ones are about 12-13 wks. This is my first hands on experience with chickens and I guess I treat them more like pets. We did purchase some CX breeds by accident since I didn't research very well before purchasing birds the first time. But we raised them and processed them, even though it wasn't that easy for us to do. We have already decided that we will cull our extra cockerels when the time comes. That is if we can't give them away to be raised by someone in need of a good roo :)
