I may have squealed a lil when i could see the baby heartbeats...

Okay i squealed Alot and screamed a few times...

I had convinced myself it wasnt gna work and i cant do the incubation myself :shrug: ima pessimist(sp?!)

Two of my "backyard blend" pullets from my Easter hatch. Black one is half speckled sussex, half (feed store) australorp. I really like the lavender tones she picked up from the sussex. The blue (?) one is half speckled sussex, half lavender/splash orpington. They're so stunning! I'm hoping they lay well like their mothers. I enhanced the picture SLIGHTLY to bring the colors out. Y'all know how pictures never fully do justice to our gorgeous chickens. ;)

It's very exciting to see your first living egg. Wait to you hatch your first chicks equally as exciting. Your hooked let the chicken math begin. :jumpy Pam
 
FYI peeps the first reported cases of fowl pox has been reported. This is a good time to get your mosquito repellents out. Dump water that's not for drinking. Add herbs to the nest boxes like lemon balm,mints,rosemary. If you can have a fan in your coop turn it on at dusk when they feed. Last year it was bad almost everyone on this page had cases of it some turned to wet fowl pox which can kill your birds if you don't treat right away. Now for good news yesterday my isbar laid a mint green colored egg! Pam

Pam, should I vaccinate my chickens for the fowl pox? I looked at some info real quick and it mentioned there is a vaccination for it.

Well, I went to give a treat to the chickens and while the cage was open my injured Leghorn jumped out. Well I had been parading her around the other chickens like you said to so I decided to see what happened. Well, you were right. My cockerel ran after her right away and tried to mate with her. I pushed him off and he tried a few more times before I gave up and picked him up. She walked around the other chickens and none of them pecked at her. So I put her back in her little pen and not sure what to do now. Let her heal and put her back with them? If it happens again do I need to get rid of that roo?
