"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Let's talk mosquitoes. Again. :/

I've got a broody on my porch. I've got a fan on her now, so they can't settle. Her comb and wattles are practically white. I'm putting electrolytes in her water, maybe some beef hearts to give her a boost? I'm not sure.

My run is 10x10x4, and the coop is inside that. Is it totally infeasible to drape the whole thing in mosquito netting? The bugs aren't so bad during the day, for the birds that are moving around and ranging. They're all suffering at night.

We were thinking of putting our mosquito zapper in the coop. Have put mint and rosemary in nest boxes. My lemon balm plant died :( or I would be putting that too. But never put the fan yet...guess that is going in the coop too this weekend

Hey all. I keep up on this forum, but also keep quiet. Mainly just because I only have 4 chickens and haven't had any problems or questions yet, but yes I believe the mosquitoes are beginning to wreak their havoc over here too. I've noticed minor black and red spots on my girls' legs which are now spreading to their combs and waddles - I think must be fowl pox. Otherwise they are healthy, but we are swamped with mosquitoes and recently they have been trying to roost on places that aren't their coop... First it was the yard gate, then the back porch railing. Any ideas on why they would be doing this? It's not fun to have to go out at dust to shoo them into the coop, much nicer when they 'go to bed' on their own and we just close the coop door. I'm thinking maybe the mosquitoes were bothering them once we stopped running the fan in the coop at night since the temps have started dropping. I've tried sticking cuttings of my catnip and oregano plants in there, could try rosemary, but not sure if any of this is doing any good. There is a single LED nightlight in the coop for them and we even added a new 2x4 perch since we were thinking maybe they didn't like the single branch option, but they still don't want to go up on their own. Their yard is 20x30 and they stay in about half the day - the other half is free roaming through the yards, neighbor's unused garden, and woods. Maybe they're just spoiled? Lol :idunno

Mine have one or two small black spots on their combs also. None on their feet. I did vaccinate them for fowl pox but I know that doesn't make them immune to it. Just keeps them from being as sick if they do end up infected with it.

I moved Emily out to the tractor today! It's been a month since her attack. She's been hopping in and out of the milk crate and making a huge mess of shavings in the dog kennel (in the laundry room). Yesterday she perched on my hand and weakly gripped with her left foot, so I think all she needs now is "physical therapy" in the form of "chicken activities." I searched for her wound and I could find the stains from the blu kote, but not any broken skin.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and support. :love

I put up a zapper in the yard this year and it made a big difference. I also have a fan that blows through the coop from one side along the perch and out the other side that I turn on every night in the summer. I'm sure that has helped, too. My chicken yard is in the shadiest (yea) part of the yard so it helps with the heat in the summer, but it also has the most
Mosquitos. Between the zapper and fan, all is well. PS I just set the fan on low.

Hi everyone, I have been busy I will get your PM,'s answered shortly. I'm changing my Baton Rouge trip to either Monday or We'd. Of next week. Primrose I have the following breeds that will fit your needs CCL, Isbars, light Sussex, Biefelders. All have sweet temperaments the first two are on the smaller end of LF. First year eggs are med. and grow to large. One has blue and the other green eggs. The latter two lay large brown eggs that can get to jumbo as they get older. The Biefelders lay four to six eggs a week. The Sussex aren't laying yet so you would gave to go by what they say on the breed page.

Yes, I do sell hatching eggs. Right now the only ones I'm sure are full blooded are some Isbars, white Bress. When slow season hits I let them free range together. I have separated them now and waiting three more weeks before selling to make sure they pure breeds before selling. If I get enough orders in Baton Rouge area I don't mind taking a drive.

Do you still raise chickens? I live in Slidell and am looking for 3 young hens. I was hoping to get one large cochin or brahma. Do you have anything for sale?
