"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I wanted to post more yesterday but couldn't find the time. We are expanding the barn. We dug the holes for, set, leveled, concreted, and braced the 6 main 6x6s for the new side. We managed to finish right before dusk, and I'm very glad we knocked it out in one day. I didn't take any good photos that show the whole thing, but have a few of the new posts

My new silver laced hen also came in the mail yesterday. She arrived safe, grouchy, and mid moult. I set her up next to my flock for a proper introduction

During all the barn construction I managed to see quite a few Marans lay their respective eggs. I know who to remove from the pen now for very under impressive egg color

New construction is always fun! I'm working on my coop as well. BTW, that SLW is beautiful

I already like them more than the Bresse. I found the Bresse to be very skittish. The Biels don't get scared unless I move fast when going after them or changing the food/water.

I'm suprized my Bresse have a calm temperament . The Biefelders are very easy going tho. The other breed I have that is as good natured as them are the Neiddhiner. Pam

Your addition looks great. You should quarenteen the new hen for 21 days. I was always told 30 but the Ag vet said 21. Pam

The money aspect hurts, but I'm very excited for the barn expansion. We've had 6 horses sharing a 3 stall barn for too long. We will be able to stretch out a bit and store square bales in the barn instead of elsewhere. Plus it will lead to an additional pen or two for Marans.

Mrs Pam, I wish I could have her in an entirely separate yard, but for now she is across the yard from my Wyandottes. They can definitely see each other, but she is as far away as I can get her for now. I'm tending to her last when I do my chicken rounds, and she has her own feed bin for me to scoop from. She will be on that side of the yard for about 18 days and then will be moved much closer to the Wyandotte coop to make room for chicks I have hatching. I'll probably put her with the flock 3 or 4 nights later

The new project looks good, that is hard work digging holes and placing posts. You have some marans eggs with a nice dark color. That is why I want some marans, for the dark chocolate colored eggs. The silver laced Wyandotte is pretty!

Yes, I'm nice and sore today from all the lifting and digging. The Marans are a project, but the whole breed pretty much is. Next year I won't have any of the hens laying the lighter eggs in the breeding pen. Who ever is laying the bottom right egg is getting removed though. I dislike everything about the color. If I could get everyone to lay the color of the left most egg on the second row, I'd be one happy camper.

I'm very happy with the wyandotte hen. I'm anxious to see her after her molt
