I do like the Easter eggers as well. Guineas are probably out of the question in the city I imagine.. lol How well do your Easter eggers lay and for the most part how docile and friendly are they?

It varies by bird, but handling often as chicks helps the most. They had average production I’d say. Australorps are also friendly and good layers. I try to keep a few Australorps and Easter eggers in my flock. I’m at a summer camp and the flock is for education, so I need birds that can tolerate being handled, and funky colored eggs.

How do you end up with black sussex? Are they easy to obtain? What are their personalities like?

I bought them from tractor supply.. I have not seen them there since then.. this year they have had a lot of the meat birds and barred rock. Seems like those are the popular birds this year

Oh and the black Sussex are awesome other than the obsession of being head chicken. I can carry them around the yard, if out free ranging I can walk up and pick them up except when there is a squabble, they are obedient. I can tell them to get off the porch and they go. They can sometimes be obnoxious. Like in the morning when they want out if I am late releasing them and the other time is after laying an egg they feel the need to announce it to the world as they leave the nest. I can pet them while they are singing their little song to the egg they lay. I like them jut the daily squabbles with each other can be... Hawk drawing...

I enjoyed speckled Sussex, and I really loved Svart honas. I need them for awhile, and had them free ranging. Excellent little birds, very hardy and self-sufficient. Fierce mothers. Eggs are small and below average production, but they were very neat birds.

Personally I don’t think you can go wrong with mixed birds. They’re usually very hardy and come in so many shapes and sizes. Most of my current flock is mixed birds.

Do you want eggs or pets? I also really love banty cochins. They’re small and funny, good layers and good moms. I had a small flock that free-ranged for a month with no predator losses; I have no idea where they were sleeping at night. They just roamed the grounds and I had a super hard time catching them again.
