"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I hope that everyone had a good day. I just want to say this and I'm signing off for the night. I'm still tired from being up until midnight bathing Guineas.

I went out to the chicken yard to take a look at the Peafowl aviary to compare the damage and difference between the dirt floor/runs compared to the sand run with all of this rain. I already kinda knew what I was going to see but it has confirmed what I am already going to do. The sand in the aviary looked AMAZING and passed ALL tests hands down!! I could not tell that it even rained in the sand aviary. The Guin Pen IS a covered run but it still has the dog kennel chain link sides. The Peafowl Aviary is NOT covered. It only has chicken wire on ALL sides. You would think that the covered run would be drier than the open run but its the sand that seals the deal. I walked in the aviary with no shoes on and I could not feel any water at all!!! There were no puddles and it was not sloushly. It was a smooth surface. The sand looked the same way that it did when I put it in there on DAY 1.

So for everyone who has open runs and who is having the same problem that I am, I would suggest and recommend 110% going with sand if you can. I AM SOLD ON SAND!!!!

I initially purchased 3 yards of sand to fill an area that is 28 feet long - 10 feet wide. The total cost was only $20.00 for pickup.

Good night all.

My chicken yard was a MESS. The Guin Pen was the worst. The guineas were covered in mud. I guess it rained sideways because it was so muddy in there. Some of them were so muddy, that they were grounded. They couldn't fly onto the roost because they were covered in so much much. The mud was weighing them down. It reminded me of the oil spill when the birds were covered in oil but instead this was mud. It was just as bad. So, needless to say I was giving baths last night to all of my guineas. I was out there until midnight last night. Every 2 guineas that I bathed (24 total), I had to change out their bucket of water. And this means walking to the house and getting warm water from inside the house. I didn't bathe them in the cold water from the outside hose. I just wasn't going to do that. The water was BLACK. I had to haul a bale of hay in their pen and spread it out for them to try to absorb the water and mud so that they could walk without getting muddy again. Their feeder and waterers were covered in mud. I felt so sorry for them.

I hope that the weather gets better soon. I have decided that EVERY pen and chicken house will now have a sand run. I will not bathe ANOTHER guinea because of a muddy run!

Oh Julie,.. so sorry,.. poor guineas,.. you must be dog tired,.. . I know what ya mean about that sideways rain,.. it rained like that in the rooster's pen and there was nowhere for him to go but up in the rafters,. I hope you dry out soon,.. we still have standing water in the chicken yard and even the usually dry areas are squelchy,.. rained every day since then too,.. wasn't it just weeks ago we were in a drought?

WOW Julie!! You were one busy lady!! Glad you got your birdies all clean!!

For me, I don't leave out any eggs. Because I sell eggs, I pack and store eggs immediately. I don't want any of my customers getting sick from me leaving my eggs out too long.

I know that people do leave eggs out for periods of time and eat them but I just never have.

Hey there La-yers dropping in to say howdy and respond on the egg ? have you ever googled 1000 year egg if not check it out "interesting" to say the least

I've been debating on whether to use sand or not. The only issue I have is do they scratch around in it like they do in the dirt?? What do they do all day??

Thought I would say howdy to all . My back is doing better . No surgery !! Just some injections in the spine where I broke some of the vertebrae and that has stopped the pain for the most part . Got some buffs coming along and still waiting on the wyandottes to lay . My RIR would follow me everywhere I went if I would let her . She is my girl . lol If my wife finds out she might get jealous .
