Alas....In my personal broad experience with Nigerians,Pygmies,Boer,LaMancha, and several others....They are NOT lawnmowers. They will eat your flowers, plants, weeds, trees, bark, trash, feed, and everythingthing else EXCEPT grass..... If you want a lawnmower, get a mini, pony or a sheep. My personal lawnmower is a pony, but I also had a Barbado ram for almost a year.Him and the pony ate all the grass....NONE of the goats would touch grass. They would chew the bark off my planted trees, bend my fence all up trying to reach the weeds, bushes, and leaves on the otherside. They ate the treeline completely down.Plus they are always escapees.Even sweet little pain in the butt bottle fed babies when they grow up.
Harry...Take care of yourself.Sorry to hear about your health. Listen to the drs and dont be a pain in the butt patient.!!
Mike...We are too much alike.I hate to see an animal hurt, but I'll kill an animal in a heartbeat if neccesary.Matter of fact I have. A few years back on Thanksgiving day.We had around a hundred gamecocks at one point.Well this one day we lost about 1/3 of them.We had gone somewhere that morning and when we got back we found our dogs going crazy and saw some dogs hit the woods.Upon inspection, they had killed many of our prized birds, including hens and stags. They didnt mess with the birds on tiecords, just the ones in roundpens and flypens. Well,I ALWAYS take pictures and everything.Grew up being a cops daughter...lol... Well a few minutes after we were inside we hear the dogs going crazy again.Look outside and their is a small pack of dogs after our birds again. We go outside with the shotgun and 22 rifle and fire a couple warning shots.Dogs holler and run awway..Figure ok we got rid of them.Well maybe 20 minutes later thy were back.Coming in through the back woods. They proceed to start killing birds again.I got pictures of a couple of the dogs IN the cages killing, along with pics of each dog in action and pics of all the pens and carnage afterward. We go outside again, this time one of the dogs start growling at DH and turns toward him.He hit him square in the chest and I had a freaken Pekinese mix (bigger) coming at me and I got a throatshot on that one and a gutshot on a husky/pyrenees looking dog. Between these attacks I had gotten in my truck and drove around looking for where the dogs had come from.I thought I recognized at least one of them and stopped at this house behind me aways.I blew the horn for a few minutes and sat there and tried again. No one would come out and I could tell there was people in there. But the fence was locked and there was another dog in there not too nice acting. So I left.Well after I shot the dogs and finished taking pics,I called the police. I knew the cop that came out.At first he was like she can sue you for shooting her dog(apparently they had called the cops too while he was there.) Then I brought him to the back yard where my birds were all in a fence AND penned up.He saw all the blood, the dead birds and everything. He followed blood and feathers out the back where they had torn into the fence.Well,he changed his mind. And told me to sue her...lol. I told him I already had a couple birds in bags on ice for evidence.Plus the pics.Beautiful graphic pics.showed the dogs in action and blood n feathers on their face.and them running through the back... He told her I had the right to protect my livestock. She said she was gonna press charges,he said you have the right to.But the written law is on her side. She called me threatening me to sue and all kinda crap.Said I coulda at least come told her. I said I tried but no one would come out. She said it was thanksgiving and there were no vets open.I told her that I work for a vet and I personally know for a fact there are 2 emg clinics and any number of vets would have seen her, just charged an emg fee...yada yada and so on.By the time I got finished citing ordinances and livestock/dangerous animal law to her, told her I worked closely with AC and the SO,and told her I would be happy to see her in court because I would be countersuing for close to 10,000 dollars worth of present and future damages, and I would win.I never heard from her again. Cadjien would know the worth of good OE fowl and offspring I'm sure.
Julie...you just keep them skeeters to urself. Or Ima have to send some SG your way....lol...
Missi. You can also find out from your local supervisors office. The ordinances are usually kept there.Or whatever governing body ya'll have ...lol...I would actually check the LAW too.Lots of cops and such do not know the actual LAW concerning livestock.Around here,Our law still stands from the 1800's that anyone caught stealing cattle or horses shall be hung in front of his peers. So they are very strict on those people because they dont want to have a public hanging in these days...lol...
That's why I only have 1 goat and my neighbor gave him to me.
I agree with you as far as sheep for lawn mowers.
I'm researching livestock guardian dogs now. I have always wanted a pyrenees but I am looking at the anatolian pups now but leaning heavily toward the pyrenees.
Skeeters, skeeters, skeeters.
