"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning everyone! WOW! I have missed a lot. You all have been very chatty. :welcome to all of the new Lay-ers. I hope that everyone had a great weekend. The nights have been cold, cold cold cold. One night I noticed that the ducks had frost on their wings. I wanted to scoop them up and bring them inside but then I realized that their bodies are designed to deal with this type of weather. :/

It's going to be another raining day tomorrow. Stay dry everyone. :frow

Same thing here.  The coop is dry and under a canopy covered in tarp.  I got home from the movies and the girls were SOAKED!  I wish I had been home to see what they were doing..."singing in the rain?"  LOL

PS  I went to see Les Miserables.  Those poor girls looked like extras from the movie! LOL  I just don't understand why they would stand in the rain when they have a clean, dry coop with food and water in it.

:yuckyuck

:lau

Mine do the same thing. :/

Sorry...
I'm a friend of  kuntrygirl...
I'm the quail man as most call me around here....St. Landry Parish..LA
the site from Cornell U has most major diseases and multiple pics of each infection...
Every time somebody ask me about a possible problem I always refer them there first as a starting point....
We do have a couple great Avian Vets in South LA also for those with advanced problems....
But as catdaddyfro posted most times culling is the best route...
Again..Sorry for just jumping in....unannounced...
Best of Luck!!!

Good morning James Marie Farms. Glad to see you here. Great link that you posted. I am bookmarking it.

What other Avian Vets do you know of? The only one that I am aware of is Dr. Michael Woodward in Lake Charles and of course LSU School of Vet Medicine. Are there any avian vets in the Opelousas/Lafayette area?

And please continue to jump in. We love getting information. It's always great to learn. :)

Yes, they will get along just fine. I have had up to 30 roosters in one pen and they were just fine.

Yep, same here!
Geez now wonder it was so cheap. They must have ran over some trees while baling the hay :lau  You can always use the sticks for a fire LOL This person should not be selling hay!!

I would have been suspicious since that's about half the price for good hay around here. I would call this person and let them know what poor quality hay they are selling. They may be selling it, but not harvesting it. Where I buy my hay, one person raises it, another group of guys do the baling and my friend goes and picks up a trailer full for his horses and sells me what I need for my rabbits. It's locally grown, a very good quality of horse feed with Bahaya and Bermuda grasses, but with no sticks for firewood, LOL. I have all the fire wood I can use. Hubby loves using his chainsaw and log splitter. The person you bought the hay from, probably doesn't know and you are doing no one a favor by keeping it to yourself. !!! Let her know and stop hiding under that chair! Wouldn't you like to know, if you were selling what you thought was good hay and it turned out to be CRAP? :old

Oh, I wanted to contact her but a friend of mine suggested that I don't but I don't agree with that. If it were me, I would want someone to tell me about the product that I was selling. I think I"m going to call her and send her a pic of the collapsed and missing tepee that was found in her hay. ;)

Not sure if it's ok to post this question here. I live just south of I-10. My barred rock chicks are almost 4 weeks old. Is it ok to put them outside now in the coop and run without a heat lamp? They're in the house with no heat on them now. I've also been letting them out during the day in their run for the past couple of days. Are they feathered enough yet? I see it's supposed to get down in the 30's again next week.
Cute birds. I agree with everyone in that it's too cold to have them outside right now.

Hi and welcome!!!

I think you can see that this is the best and most friendly site imaginable. Plenty of good advice and family-like concern for each other.

I bought "Chickens for Dummies" and never have opened it because the wonderful people on this site have answered all my questions.

Also, lots of good humor!

For anyone who isn't yet NPIP certified--the USDA vet just left. He was friendly and helpful. Since I'd been losing numerous birds lately, he checked the ones I still suspected may not be quite right--he thinks my vet was correct and that it is the cocci, but the birds in question either didn't drink enough or I didn't mix the solution strong enough. We are now giving it to them straight with the syringe. He told me to call him if I lost another and he would notify LSU that I'd be sending a bird. Yay! I have help! I am wondering, though...he told me that "technically" I am not supposed to ship anything outside of Louisiana without contacting him and having him come check birds each time I'm sending them. He said most folks don't do that like they're supposed to, but that's the only way to protect ourselves if someone claims our birds hurt their flock...?? Anyone else hear this when they got certified?

All of my birds checked out okay so now I am just awaiting my paperwork in a few weeks with my official number.

On another note--our postal service is AWFUL! I had four sets of eggs coming. All were shipped out Wednesday. One arrived Friday. One arrived today. The other two are lost. Tracking numbers show that they flew out of their home states on Wednesday night--Shreveport didn't process them until Saturday afternoon--and no one has supposedly seen them since. I have been on the phone all morning. I finally got one supervisor at the main 1800ASKUSPS number and the woman had the audacity to tell me that Priority Mail means "about 2 - 3 days" and that I should have had them sent Overnight on Express. My response to her was that there was a big difference between 2 - 3 days and 8 days (if they arrive by Wednesday since they're closed tomorrow) and that suggesting I use Express next time was ridiculous--I told her I teach 3rd grade, perhaps I should tell my parents if they will pay me a little extra on the side I'd do a better job of teaching their kids! Same concept! Either way, I had to get the rest of my eggs in the bator--so the other two sets that won't be here until Wednesday will just be goners...so frustrated about that.

Geez...morons.

Congrats on passing!!!! :thumbsup :woot

Glad to hear that everything went well. Glad to hear that he looked at them and you are getting help. I know that you must feel relieved.

I have never heard anything about contacting the vet to check the birds before shipping. Unless I missed it the times my vet came out to test, I don't remember that.

Sorry to hear about your eggs. Gotta love the postal service. :/

My NPIP re-certification is due 2/2013. I'm ready!!!:D

Happy New year to all :)
