"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

No one has suggestions on how I can stop my crazy pullets from trying to nest and lay out on the ground? I am seeing feathers from one of them in a nest, but the others just wanna sit outside and squawk. I have no clue what is wrong with those girls!

Celie--I may very well try giving them some peppers...but how will I coax them into the nest? Hmmmmm...
Have you tried putting a fake egg in the nests you want them to use? My hens like to lay their eggs where they already have eggs, I guess they feel they are safer or something! You can get ceramic eggs from most hobby shops. They are also great for getting rid of any egg eating snakes and discourage crows from breaking duck eggs!

I buy some minnows from a bait store every few weeks when I go to the feed store and throw them in the ponds when I get home (I love the little old man who owns and runs the place so stop and buy them just to visit with him).

Our ponds aren't very old, one is 2 years and the other 1 year and we didn't stock them: Didn't figure fish would stand a chance against the ducks. We have found accidental fish in there (a catfish and sunfish): I have no idea how they got there unless they hitched a ride with some of the herons that visit.

We always have a ton of tadpoles though.

Anyway, by raising minnows in the aquaponics system, I get my plants fertilized and get to scoop some out and replenish the pond population every couple weeks. I was growing duck weed, but couldn't keep up with demand...greedy little ducks!

We get a lot of frogs, too. I keep an eye out for turtles, though, because they will eat the feet off of a small duck, if it is a big enough turtle!

I have fake eggs in that coop now. I don't know what else to do with these girls. They are apparently a little on the "slow" side.

Hi, everyone! The trip to Carencro went very well. The day was so beautiful and Rusty was very nice. He took lots of time with us and was so patient with my granddaughter. He took a lot of time for her to pick out the two bunnies and answered all our questions. He even threw in a free water bottle. He only charged us $5 each for the bunnies, so we were very happy. Here are a few fotos of the adventure. Amanda holding Rosie, Amanda picking her bunnies, the rabbit cage for now next to the chicken coop.

Hey everyone. What a beautifal day today. I hope that everyone made the most out of today.

I got my first 2 guinea eggs of the year. I spoke to a local breeder last week and he told me that my guineas wouldn't start laying until March or April. I guess my guineas didn't get the memo because they started early.

Just joined from St.Charles parish but moved to Kentwood back in July 2012. I live on land that has been in the family for over 100 years. And started raising chickens to help with bugs I have 2 horses and use to stall them at a boarding stable & was told to always keep chickens around to help out with the flies. So I got me 8 then I went back & 6 more chicks. They or now laying & I'm having fun so I bought 12 more!

This is the best forum imaginable. Nicest bunch of people! How nice to be on old family land!

Try adding a little calf mana to their feed if you need them to get going or you could just go squeeze em a little.
My grown hens wanted to play coy but went in the pen to fix some wire with my hammer in hand and I think they thought it was a message to them
