Surprisingly, my first day of free ranging the chicks went really well. I shocked the dog one good time when he went near them and then he left them alone. I still wouldn't trust him alone with them though.

They all look pretty content. And yes, I'd keep an eye on the dog for a while. We have two Golden Retrievers, and I've had them kill 25 grown chickens in a couple of hours. They can wipe you out very fast.

He's a little lab mix from the shelter and just over a year old. Trust has not been earned yet. He's only just earned the right to not be locked up during the night.

I tried that a few months ago and woke up to see a wreck in my living room. He decided to rip apart 5 brand new books and found a new love for for those kleenex with vicks vapor rub in them. It looked like a snow storm in my living room. Not to mention he also ate the mouse for my laptop.

At the year mark, the most I see when I wake up is him sleeping on the sofa. Big difference!! Trust around chickens....hmm...I'm thinking another year and a half at the least.

How about if I let you know when I have extra goslings? I've sold eggs in the past but didn't plan to sell any this year unless I get overwhelmed with eggs. I'm watching for what turns out in my hatch. I lost my buff saddleback goose this past summer and will be watching for another buff saddleback goose to replace her. I'm also watching for a solid buff gosling. Three of my ganders are split to buff/saddleback, two other ganders I have a strong suspicion are carrying the buff gene. Another one of my ganders is either blue or lavendar. I'll be watching to see what his offspring look like. Long story short, I'll be wanting to get rid of some goslings later this spring/summer, however, I want to pick through them first.
