so where are you north or south

Right now, I actually live in Vinton. And, yes, I have some of my chickens in town too. You just can't take the country out of some people.

We are renovating a house on Houston River Road which would be almost due north of you. We'll be fairly close neighbors once I get moved.

We get a lot of frogs, too. I keep an eye out for turtles, though, because they will eat the feet off of a small duck, if it is a big enough turtle!

Had a great weekend and despite the rain in the forecast...the temps look nice for the upcoming week! My main garden was FINALLY dry enough to get the disc in it again this afternoon: Good thing since their is a lot of rain in the upcoming week's forecast. I have to have that field ready when it is time to plant. I have almost 400 starts (tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants) that are going to need out of my house in another 4-5 weeks! I can't wait to get out there and get planting!

We had to move a row of trees in our orchard, which took most of the afternoon today: My husband wants to extend the goat pasture and those trees would have been lunch. We also planted more citrus. Now, all I have to do is get the grapes moved tomorrow if it isn't raining and build a trellis for some thornless blackberries we want to try.

I went to Tractor Supply and picked up another Little Giant styrofoam bator and egg turner Saturday morning: That makes three of them in addition to my Brinsea. They have them on sale till mid-April for $10 off and I needed more incubator space since I went nuts and ordered a bunch of hatching eggs.

I am getting two dozen eggs from Frank Reese at Good Shepherd (1 dz Barred Rocks, and 1 Dz Cornish mixed Dark and White Laced), 1 Dz Duckworth Barred Rocks (from the line Skyline auctions off on eBay), 1 Dz Padgett WL Cornish, and a dozen German New Hampshires....in addition to all the Buff Saddleback Pomeranian goose eggs I ordered (Not counting the ones from my birds) and all the Beltsville turkey eggs. I already have chicks and poults everywhere.

The geese are being loud little boogers now that breeding season is here. So far, I am only getting eggs from one of my 8 girls, but everyone is actively mating and nests are starting to be made so it is only time.

I have the Pomeranians blocked out of the front pasture and pond so I could put my Toulouse out there. Since I interrupted their regular routine, they must be bored and have decided to cause trouble.

After I let them out and they steal scratch from the chickens they go to the pond and their pasture. By lunch, they come marching from the pond and come to harass the dogs: The whole time trying to reach through the fence to steal any toys they see. Then they wander back to the barn and stop to make sure their stalls are still in there and then off to the orchard. When they are done there, they do the whole thing in reverse...all while honking their heads off....lol. Here are a couple pictures of some of my "gang".

Beautiful geese! You have a lovely place.

My geese do the same thing to our dogs. I guess it's just what geese do. They'll stick their heads into the dog kennel through the chain link and nip at the dogs -- then the dogs attempt to grap the heads of the geese as the geese pull back through the chain link fence. So, watching this unfold is quite funny. It's like a seesaw with the geese and the dogs picking at each other while the heads of the geese pop in and out of the dog kennel. At first, I was very afraid that the dogs would grab the geese by the head or neck and hurt them, but, through the years I've come to understand that this is just how the geese and dogs interact. Recently, the geese stuck their heads into the dog kennel and were eating the dog food. I went out and moved the dog feeder away from the geese so that they couldn't reach it. A little while later the feeder was back at the end of the kennel and the geese were eating the dog food again. What I later realized was that our little snauzer was moving the dog feeder next to the fence on purpose so that she could bark and/or play with the geese as they stuck their heads in to eat the dog food. Silly animals!!

That is funny, bet it is a hoot to watch too! Goofy pup! My Goldens act all big and tough. They charge the fence and snarl like they are going to kill something. However, if they are out on the property and the geese come anywhere near them they run for it. I don't know if it is because they have been nipped, or know I'd punt them into next week for hurting them. Either way, it is all a tough man act on both parts!

I love your geese too. Wish I had more room: I'd have a few more breeds and Sebbies would make that list for sure. Sadly, I promised my husband we would stick with the Poms, and I already snuck a pair of Toulouse past him: I only got away with them because we won a $100 gift certificate from McMurray. It was either get the pair of geese with our duck order, or double the ducks...he chose geese. They are only the utility type, but I really like them. It is sad to have to separate them, but I can't risk the gander breeding one of the Pom females. I need the goslings and have hatching egg orders to fill after fertility is confirmed.

my dogs are very trusted with my girls. Gretchen my lab pit mix, during storms has broken into the coop and slept on the hay with the girls laying next to her. and trixie my wienny mix will round them up for me after they have free ranged the back yard all day. Even my little male does not bother the girls.

I'm jealous, that must be such a wonderful feeling. I wish I could say the same for my dogs. I trained my two, rather samll, dogs from the beginning when my girls were young by putting them on long leashes and doing very strong corrective pull and "NO" if they went near. All seemed well. Then the other day I let the girls out with the dogs and the little chioodle went at my RIR with a very serious attack. I was able to catch my poor chicken before the dog because she was running to me. Really scared her and me. No more trust for me.

Hi, everyone! The trip to Carencro went very well. The day was so beautiful and Rusty was very nice. He took lots of time with us and was so patient with my granddaughter. He took a lot of time for her to pick out the two bunnies and answered all our questions. He even threw in a free water bottle. He only charged us $5 each for the bunnies, so we were very happy. Here are a few fotos of the adventure. Amanda holding Rosie, Amanda picking her bunnies, the rabbit cage for now next to the chicken coop.
