"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hello! I just moved to Natchitoches and I am new to chickens. I only want 2 to start with, preferably babies, definitely female. I'm pretty open to different breeds. Anyone near me that will sell me just 2? Thanks!

And the LA-yers thread. I'm on the other side of the state from you but I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction.

Welcome to BYC and La-yers, too. Glad you joined us. I would give you two chicks, but I am on the other side of the state! I am sure someone in your area will chime in in the morning.

Welcome! Friendly folks around here will answer any questions you have.

Your best bet is to start at the feed stores. I am an hour away and have some cochin chicks at this point for sale that I could give my best shot at picking the pullets, but with babies, it's usually anybody's guess unless you buy sex linked birds or you vent sex them.

I have to snicker inwardly when I read your line "I only want 2 to start with"

Yep....I said something like that, too. Here I am 76 chickens later with another 60 something eggs in the incubators and more eggs coming next week!

Go ahead and practice now, " My name is Sayruh and I'm addicted to chickens."

I raise Pekin and Rouen ducks and in about 7 years raising these breeds, have never had one hatch any eggs! I know it has to be that I startle them if they are on their nest when I make my egg gathering rounds, but most of the eggs are laid with the chicken eggs or around the floor in the barn. What kind of nest do you'll have for your ducks? Ducks have to go broody, sometime, or there would not be any more ducks around? Is there any tricks you can let me in on? They lay fertile eggs, but don't want anything to do with brooding or the ducklings, until they are old enough to swim and take care of themselves!

It's drizzling right now and no, my garden isn't planted yet and one peice of fencing has to be replaced to keep the birds out. At least until the new poults get put out, then nothing will be off limits. They love to perch on the roof! LOL

I'm new, too. It will be a year at Easter since I got my three babies.

I couldn't take a chance of getting a rooster because I am in the city limits and can only have 3 hens and no roosters and I didn't want to fall in love with one to have to give it away. So, I had to go the way Chickenbelle said: I got one from a feed store that was sex vented to be a pullet and 2 Black Sex Linked from a feed store. That way I was pretty certain to only have females. It all worked out super well. I am hoping to figure out how to get more, three is just not enough. Through this thread I also learned about rabbits and now have two. I have even thought about selling my house and moving out of the city limits so I can have more chickens. I love love love chickens and this BYC group. So, welcome! Come get addicted with us.
