there are several La-yers who are in your area & I think a monthly swap in Slidelll -- they'll check in & let you know some info I'm sure.

Good morning everyone! Finally got my schedule back to normal so more playing with the chicks.

One day they will learn that their brooder is only a foot and a half high on one side.
Can I move them to a pen with a hardware cloth bottom yet? It was an old quail pen, but its more exposed to the elements.

Feather are coming out. (like in pic yesterday) Some are pretty, some look like they were mutated, until they spread their wings. I can defenitely tell which ones are eating more. The big, strong ones come running when I stick my hand in. ( and lose interest once they realize there is no food

) Some of the smaller ones panic at my hand, but I'll handle them alot so they get used to it. Between me and my dad, we've been through half a big container of mealworms! (for the chicks of course, lol)
thanks for the compliments; I told him & he was amazed. I'm going to have to price materials & come up with a price list for some of his birdhouses -- he always has just built them out of odds & ends he has laying around, he never has actually gone out & bought materials to build them out of. I'll try & get some pics of some of his other ones to put up.
He showed me these, they are awesome! He will have no trouble selling them.

To BackYardChickens!

Best thing you can do coop-wise, is site it properly. If you have any trees that would block the afternoon sun, or for that matter most of the sun after early morning during the summer, that would be a great place to put it. Also, make sure to make at least part of the outer walls from wire: A lot of ventilation is a good thing! Plus, and this is VERY important.....make sure to use hardware cloth (welded wire with 1/4 or 1/2 inch openings) and not chicken wire or anything with holes large enough for raccoon paws to fit through. Lastly, reinforce the bottom of the coop to prevent break-in's by predators.

Good Luck from your neighbor in Bush!

Please do post more pictures! If he continues to make them out of odds and ends, and wants to sell some, I would be just as happy with those!

John, you can move them if you have a brooder lamp to put on one side so they can get under it for warmth if they get cold, & they are sheltered from the wind. If you don't have one come get one from me; I have several that I'm not using right now.

Personally, I always wait to move my chicks to my outside brooders w/heat lamps until they are fully feathered out -- about another week in your case.
I know they are cute & fun as can be! Don't forget to give them some grit along w/the treats - they love oatmeal & some freshly chopped grass would be nice, too. I just use a box of parakeet grit & sprinkle it on their oatmeal at that age. Have fun with them!

I definately want one.

Has anyone gotten "sample eggs" yet this year? You know the ones hens lay when they first start to lay, about the size of a marble with no yolks? I got the first one for this year in a nest today and am wondering what causes it?
