Just got 5 laying hens after a few years without any chickens. Would love to know if there are breeders around Monroe and the north part of the state.

You said a mouth full there. Do chickens get fowl pox like kids get chicken pox? LOL I hear the wet pox is really BAD !! What do you do for it and what are the symptoms? Do they have to get dry pox and then it can go into wet pox? After they get the dry pox, can they build up an immunity to both?

Just went by TSC for some more feed. The poor chicks there are growing old. about the same age as mine. They don't look so "cute and fluffy" anymore. Hope they sell. Of course, there were ducks in the "assorted bantams" container, and the RIR sign was on what looked like White Leghorns.

I'm not about to go get more though. To worried about the coop. I think our run will be 96' by 30'.

I haven't mentioned this to my mom, but isn't the rule 10 sq ft per bird.

They don't lay well at all--maybe once a week.

When I ran into TSC in Alexandria to get my birds that were lost in the mail that Thursday night--we looked at the chicks in there. They had several bins of white chicks that were unlabeled. I noticed one bin had larger chicks that looked about 3 to 4 weeks already and they were bloody and losing feathers. Another bin had smaller white chicks about a week or two old that were also listed as unlabeled "special" of the week. I couldn't tell what they were at all...didn't know if it was a random white layer or cornish. I grabbed one out of curiosity--waiting to see what it turns into.

We are going to try some meat only birds but not until summer once I've got my layers all settled in new coops. I think we are going to go with Dixie Rainbows--anyone tried these? They are supposed to be process ready at 12 weeks.

Why do my chicks have a fascination with messing up their water? They splash it and stuff newspaper in the tray so that it clogs up or soaks up all the water! They also have decided their feeder is the favorite pooping spot...grrr

I have experienced both, which is why I am getting the vaccine for all new/young birds. It was not pretty. When they get the wet version, most people say it's death waiting to take over. I don't know how my younger group survived it last year but they did. I cared for them ( washing faces, eyes, feeding, giving vitamins, electrolytes, yogurt and my own concoctions) until 1:00 am in the morning many nights. It was a rough 6 weeks but no one died on my shift. PLEASE take my advice. If your young birds that are not immune to the dry pox will be outside with mosquitoes, PLEASE get the vaccine.

Do you all remember, The Special, last October, on Cornish crosses, at Meyers ? Well I bought 50 and these meat chickens had to be a different breed from the ones they sold before ! They stayed small and featherless for so long, the layers that were in the same brooder, passed them up in size, until about 3 months old. Now they are nicely feathered out, but at 5 months, they are no longer tender enough to harvest for fryers! Did any of you buy them too, and what were yours like?

if your talking about the special they had that was 88 cents a chick for a surplus of groups of 25, i got 25 of them and processed them at 8 weeks old they were all atleast 6 pounds, they may have made a mistake with yours and someone else might be thinkig their whitle legorns sure got big fast

but i remember you posting some pics of yours and they did look small, they mustve made a mistake

Never heard of that, and we have horrible mosquitoes already! Please advise as to how and when to vaccinate. Any other vacs I need for them that I havent heard of? Pox, ew.

Hi all been busiern a one legged man in a but kikin contest around here.
Had to rehome me a couple coyotes and 1 fox but my awesome pyrenees Sheba made sure no one was a casualty this time

She ratted em out though real fast 1 just stood there looking at her raising 6 sundays of cane at it up to the rehoming by express I came around the corner with

Julie have your girls call off the broodism. I am havin heck finding my girls until feeding time Got babies runnin everywhere
