"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'm glad I'm not the only animal nutcase around.  I suppose I must accept it and move on.

I have never vaccinated for pox.  Do the local feed stores also carry the syringes?  I have a TON of young chicks that I suppose I should vaccinate.  We are trying out some new breeds to see how we like them so I have in the neighborhood of 80 birds between the ages of 24 hours old to 4 months.  I better get busy.  Wing web--under skin, but not intramuscular?  That's a fine area of skin to be poking through.

The vaccine is given with a pronged applicator rather than as an injection. The prong is dipped in the vaccine and you completely penetrate the wing web (in one side, out the other).

Yes I thought the same thing! I'm going to look around youtube for a video of exactly how to do it and, if I dont feel confident doing it myself I'll sweet talk a vet tech I know into helping me lol.
I looked around tsc yesterday but they don't sell the vacc. Guess I'll order it online. I'd like to have them done before they move into their coop in the next two weeks or so..

Will I need to order that online, too? I'm hoping the local feed stores carry what I need, but who knows with any of them.

I've got two small feed stores in Leesville and two more in DeRidder to try.

And that sounds a lot easier than impacted crop surgery--which I've had to do. Ughhhh....

You're not a nutcase. You're just a loving and caring person who loves animals and will do everything in your power to save them. Sounds like everyone on this thread is the person that others call when there is any type of animal emergency. Take that as a compliment because people trust you and have faith in you that you will do everything in your power to care for animals. Believe me, that's a good thing. :/

Good to know that Petrus carries it. How much is it there?

If you order the vaccine from Jeffers, they include they include the puncturing instrument.

Poxine

Fort Dodge

Fowl Pox Vaccine(MLV)
Immunizes chickens 6 weeks of age or older and turkeys 8 weeks of age or older against fowl pox. Give by puncturing through the wing web. Puncturing instrument included.

This is a relief to know, I was wondering where there was enough meat on a poult to inject and I don't know if I could give a shot to an animal? I am a big chicken, no pun intended, when it comes to needles!

Pox vacc info
Thanks, I will definitely watch it !

That's good, because I did and I don't know where I would get it.

I didn't even ask -- they are reasonable on most of their stuff & it beats paying shipping costs. They have a pretty good selection of medications there.

OK this popped up at that right time, so I'm reposting it for anybody interested. I've made a version similar to this & used it on my dogs for years (I never put the vanilla in mine but will try that next time I make it - I just got a big quart of Mexican vanilla) I do use all the rest of the ingredients listed). For the lemon juice, I cut up 2 lemons, cover w/water & bring to a boil & then let them steep in the pot overnight.

I wonder if hanging the dryer sheets from the ceiling of the coop would help? I have used the vanilla car scent things for flies & they seemed to work.

Yay!! It's Spring!! Time to get ready for Mosquito invasions. ;-) Here's an easy, natural, pleasant repellent recipe you can make at home:

Combine in a 1...6 oz bottle:
15 drops lavender oil
3-4 Tbsp of vanilla extract
10 drops of lemon eucalyptus oil
1/4 Cup lemon juice.
Fill bottle with water.
Shake & it's ready to use.
Spray on yourself.
NOTE: these oils are fairly common... health food stores, most pharmacies, garden stores, large chain stores, or you can order them online.

Make some extra to gift to your neighbors, family & friends. (Trust me.. it'll be appreciated!)

-or Take garlic pills. This works, but might keep some people away too. lol

-or- Avon's Skin-So-Soft (this also works for ticks.... put it on your shoes, exposed socks & around your ankles.)

-or- Lots of folks said Eucalyptus oil works... just put it on exposed areas.

-or- Lots of folks say putting a fresh dryer sheet in your pocket or under your hat works well. One lady said she ties a strip of one into a bow on her dog's collar. It's worth a try!!

I think everyone's body chemistry is different, so try these out to see which one works best for you & each member of your family. No one wants to get bitten & definitely no one wants to get West Nile Virus!!
