"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Nice! What ever happened to the refrigerator idea? Oh on the ducks...10 -15 each! Thanks, Chris
I tried the refrigerator with the incukits, and it was a total disaster! I couldn't get the temperature any lower than about 118 degrees!

I tried 2 different incukits, and had the same problem with both. I figured my sebbie eggs were too valuable to experiment with, so I just bit the bullet and ordered this one! So glad I did!
I contacted him about one of those incubators, too. There is a 4 week wait at this point. I haven't gone ahead yet and handed over the dough and told him to get after it. Going to the DeRidder swap this weekend, so maybe I can sell some chicks to help cover it.
It took about 4 weeks for mine, but it was worth the wait! He asks for a $200 deposit to start on it with the rest due when he ships. GO FOR IT!
Not bad. Weekly egg orders are about that much, so in a few weeks, that sounds do-able. :)

Julie,
That's ok...it's one of those things that you either like it or you really like it!!!! I bought a lg cabinet incubator late last year and still have my two foam units. All three have been going non stop since January.

Gracie,
Something you might consider doing....I'm not sure if it will work with goose eggs but it made things much easier for me with my chicken eggs. instead of keeping tract of a bunch of different dates this is what I do now....

I collect my eggs all week from Monday to Sunday marking whats what as they come out the pens. On Sunday evening I set all the eggs collected that week and put the set date on a piece of tape and stick it to the tray. The eggs come out the cabinet incubator on day 18 (Day 18 will always fall on a Thursday night) and they go into the foam incubators. I use plastic trays turned upside down over certain eggs to separate the chicks of the same breed from different pens. Then toe punch the chicks as they come out the incubators before they go into the brooders.

The main thing that I'm trying to tell you is that I set eggs every Sunday evening and put eggs in lock-down every Thursday evening. This way I don't ever forget and leave eggs in my cabinet incubator to hatch. It has made things super easy for me. On Thursday evening's I open the Cabinet incubator and check to see what tray has the oldest date on it and those are the eggs that go into the two hatchers. I don't have to think about it at all!

Like I said I'm not sure if this will work with the goose eggs but I'm sure you will get it worked out. In the beginning I was opening the Cabinet every couple nights moving eggs around. That got old fast!

Chris
Wow. that made my head spin just reading it -- never mind actually trying to hatch that many!

Good morning all. Rained a bit on yesterday but the yard looks great with all of the sand.

Thought I would post a few pics of the yard incubators. I think this is overkill but obviously they don't.

Here are my sweet Ladies! We've gotten 9 eggs since Monday! Totally excited! In fact, they warmed right up to us. I walk out now to see them and they all come up to the fence or the door to the coop to greet me.

It has been a sweet few days having our first set of hens. We are thinking maybe next year getting chicks.

Ah, yes. The chicken math has struck you already. Just go ahead and get a roo and an incubator. Then you can hatch your own. It is a whole new feeling when that first chick hatches from your own eggs. Those are lovely ladies--they need a roo to remind them daily of how lovely they are. Sure, you could tell them....but they don't speak English very fluently.

I have not sat down and figured it out yet but I think I should be around or close to 600 chicks so far this year that I have hatched, maybe a few more. LOL, and no I don't have all those chicks here at my house. I've sold quite a bit and I have a bunch here that I'm growing out to see who I'm going to keep as breeders and who will be shown.

The rest of the story.....Then after I toe punch I keep the chicks in a very controlled environment (one of three indoor brooders) for about a week. I then wing band all the birds that I keep for myself, log all their information for each chick in my book like hatch date, pen number, parents etc. etc. and they go to one of three brooders outside (I say outside but they are in a utility room that I open up during the day and close up at night). Then the chicks (the ones I keep) go in one of three outside brooders before making it to the big coop. This is where I'll spend the rest of the year culling them down to the best of what I have.

I really don't have a clue how many birds I have here right now but before Christmas I got down to less than 30 breeders. Every week I have people over here picking up birds so I quit trying to keep up with the numbers. So now I have the available chicks in these pens/brooders over here and the off limit chicks over here...lol!

It's only getting worst to! I now have the following breeds to keep track of...

RIR's Lg fowl....2 different lines
New Hampshires Lg Fowl
Barred Rocks Lg Fowl

Black Rocks Bantams
White Rocks Bantams
Barred Rocks Bantams
RIR Bantams
and soon New Hampshire Bantams

Terri, do you needs some chicks? LOL!

Chris
