Ive been day dreaming of blue eggs for weeks...I *need* a blue and probably a green layer too lol. Somebody shoulda warned me is was gonna get addicted to the girls!

when I ordered my first chicks in January, the breeder was kind enough to forewarn me. She said her husband commented - on no, you're creating another crazy chicken lady! And yes, she did and I wear the title proudly!

More babies hatched yesterday. My turkey hen hatched the gosling and poults.

I also want toot my own horn a bit..... I passed my clinical!!

I'm so happy and exhausted. Now to just take my final exam and my HESI.

PLUS -- I put some goose eggs in the incubator this morning!! I can't wait!! They all look like they made the trip good. Only had one "partially" detached air sac. I'm keeping my finger crossed as this is my first attempt with shipped eggs and the first time I've hatched eggs in about 6 years.

Congratulations!!!!! Such a big accomplishment.

Julie, I don't have the luxury of your "natural incubators" and therefore have to rely on my mechanical incubator to hatch my goslings.

This past weekend was so gorgeous that my first batch of sebbie goslings got to have their first swim. Boy, did they enjoy that! They looked like a bunch of wet rats!

After their swim, they dried off and had a chance to eat grass for their first time. They sure are cute when they're all dried off and fluffy. My best guess is that two will be white, two possibly splash, one gray saddleback, and one buff saddleback. I also have one Pekin duck in the mix that thinks he's a goose. I can't separate him from the group.

After moving this group outdoors, I hatched a "bumper crop" of sebbie goslings. As best I can tell these will either be white or splash, and possibly one saddleback.







Ashleigh, Pearl's baby is the one in the bottom right corner. That little gosling is very danity and petite -- it really looks female.

And, since 13 is an unlucky number, I was lucky and had four more babies hatch today to bring my total sebbie gosling count thus far to 17.

The pics of their first swim and outdoor grazing are just too cute. The teddy bear in the Sebbie Nursery is priceless!

My strawberry wine is coming along just fine.

I will filter it in a couple of days and then the wait is on.

Morning everyone! I was wondering if anyone here could share opinions on Shady Grove Ranch? They are located in Texas but do deliveries to Shreveport. We were thinking about buying a cow from them but wanted to look around first.

I've also been looking at coops (I'm totally incompetent with tools and can't build one yet) and was wondering with the bipolar Louisiana weather what sort of ventilation options should I be looking for? I'm worried about my chickens roasting in the summer!


ETA: Also can anyone recommend a place close to Baton Rouge to get some baby chicks from? Or would ordering them online from My Pet Chicken be best? I want a total of around 12 and plan on mixing up breeds.

So, my oldest Pomeranian gosling has feathered out enough to see that I won't be keeping it: It is too over marked on its neck, so I will be taking it to the Covington Swap tomorrow. It is the one in the front of the picture of my gaggle of baby geese and ducks! I hope I get enough with good markings to upgrade a few of my breeders for next season!

Well, I had decided that I was going to make some of those frames to put on the ground to grow grass in for the chickens to snack on. The theory is that they will eat off the tops of the grass but can't up-root it thereby being able to continuously grow green grass for the chickens in the chicken yard. Just when I was figuring out what materials I needed to make the frames I saw an ad for very cheap old screen window frames, so I got them and my granddaughter and I took off the trim and screen and put in hardware cloth, I anchored them in the yard, put in some seed and watered it. I'll probaby sprinklel a bit of my compost dirt on it, but here's the foto. I'll post another foto of the chickens eating it if it grows and works.

That's an awesome idea. You should look into getting some purslane seed, too. Purslane is reported to be the plant with the highest source of omega3 fatty acids. Would be great for your eggs!

It can be hard to track down as it is mostly considered a weed. I found a packet at Louisiana Nursery off of Perkins (Botanical Interest seed packet). I've been eating mine as sprouts... though I'm working on growing a few to maturity so I don't have to buy seed again.
