Hey LA chick lovers! I am fairly new to this site and thought I would say hi!

frow.gif

I live right smack in the middle of the state! We have kept chickens as pets for many years for eggs. But this year we have done some meat chickens and have a whole new young(12week) flock. Our few old ladies that were left just weren't putting out any eggs anymore.

Between the chick my girl brought home from school, and the ones she picked out at the feed store to keep it company, and the 1 "Rare" chick that came with our meaties.........we now have 4 roosters :/ and that's not considering what the 3 silkies are. I really hope they are all hens! Adorable little fluff balls that they are.

So we have our main egg layers 2 Americaunas(that's what the feed store calls them, who knows what they really are called. But they lay green or light tan eggs) and 3 Red Sex Link. I really think I may need more full size egg layers, but time will tell. I am used to having more like 10-12.

The Others......This time my girl picked out quite a few kinds of chickens we have never had before. So it has been a neat experience seeing them grow and develop. She picked out 2 little matching chicks that we thought were Bantams but which turn out to be Mottled Houdans. And a pair no less. That's where 1 rooster came into the mix. The 3 Silkies, 1 black and 2 grey. 1 White Frizzle hen(is that a frizzled Cochin???) and 1 white Cochin Roo(Ugh! The most adorable little cotton ball on the planet!!!) And lastly is the big roo that came from her school science teacher. He started out as a tiny little black chick with a white spot. It seems that he is a Barred Rock Roo........but as there are quite a few kinds of black and white barred breeds......I will reserve final opinion for awhile until he is a bit older.

So now for questions on my mind.
I am thinking of breeding the Houdans(which I refer to as Who Dats ;) for dual purpose. But I would need to incorporate at least a few more hens. I would love to get good stock and it would be great if it came from within the state.
I am pressing little miss to be in 4-H to show some of these chickens. She wants to keep ALL the roos!!! At least one is going, the extra that came with the meaties. But I know nothing about showing poultry at the Rapides Parish Fair. I'm sure there is a simple process or place to find the info.
BYC is a terrible place to read about chicken maladies!!! I now am wondering if some of these youngins have mites! LOL!

I don't know that I can contribute much knowledge to this thread, I just have a farm in my backyard. SHHHHH! Don't tell the neighbors those are meaties back behind the shed!
Hi &
welcome-byc.gif
I'm in central La too. you might find some info on the Rapides fair at the LSU Ag ctr site http://www.lsuagcenter.com/ and there are several La-yers who show who can help you out - don't know of anybody w/Houdans (they are neat looking)!

So I had an exciting afternoon. Just after lunch our dogs started barking like someone was at our gate. I went outside and heard lots of dogs barking...not just ours and people yelling back beyond our fenceline. I wandered over to have a look and saw some kind of ruckus going on in the yard at our elderly neighbors house. I see something big in her bushes, followed by 6-8 dogs, guys with ropes...then their are horses.....the jerk neighbor who lives in front and his jerk son take off running that way with their 4 dogs in tow also barking their heads off as well.

After a minute of more yelling, barking, and thumping going on a steer comes charging out of the brush toward our fence. I throw my hands up and it turns just slightly and charges toward the jerk son's house and around it. Then it is back in the old lady's yard, and into the wooded area behind my chicken and goat pasture but nope, it doesn't stay there because their are three people on horseback throwing lassos at it. It comes tearing back into jerk son's yard and running around till it sees the pass through gate between jerk son and jerk father's yard is open....so darts through. Now, jerk father takes particular pride in his lawn, so I can't imagine he was too happy that a steer roping competition ended up in his back yard. Things quiet down and I figure either they caught the thing or it went to the neighbor on the other side of the road and their 20 acres....so head back for the house.

A couple minutes later the dogs, horse, and donkey start losing their minds...so back outside I go. Only to see the cowboy posse and their pack of dogs letting themselves in through my front gate: I was like okay what the heck is that about. My gate was closed and I didn't see the darned cow. But NO, the stupid thing had run down my pasture fence and was headed for my donkey pasture fence. I took off that way but not before Buffalo Bob and his dingbat Buckaroos cornered the steer and then charged at it. Of course, this causes the VERY large cow to turn and charge my pasture fence that contains my donkey. He tore down the front and kept right on going through the back: Just mowed down the fence posts like they weren't even there.

So, what may you ask did the cow's owners say to me? Sorry about that????....nope. I got "Hey hold that wire down so the dogs can go through" yelled at me. Yep, that's right not one other single word from any of them. Their cow tore the crap out of my fences and they act like they own the place. I thought well, if you are dumb enough to want your dogs in with my donkey....fine and let them in. Radar immediately charged the dogs and attempted to kill them. They start yelling at their dogs and my donkey so I slowly went and got hold of him because it wasn't the dogs fault...just his stupid owners. So, the dogs and one guy now on foot leave through the torn down back fence. The other two on horse back take off toward my gate (unoccupied horse in tow) to go around our fences and into the woods. Again not a word.

I had to call my son on the phone because he was in his room with a fan running and headphones on so heard nothing outside. I kept the donkey occupied while he brought what we needed to fix the fence. As he was working righting the posts on the back fence line one of the riders came up and asked to cut through before he fixed it. He looked at him and told him to go around, make sure to get his cow and get the hell off our property. It took the both of us working for nearly 40 minutes to fix the damage: He bent three posts that had to be replaced and knocked over a couple on each side when he bent the fences down plus tore the wire apart at a corner where it met another fence. Had I been here alone, I would have had to tie the donkey to a tree and been out there much much longer.

You know, I wouldn't have had nearly the issue with it had they at least apologized...or said anything instead of ignoring me and then ordering me around before they left. Ticks me off....man some people have a LOT of nerve. Oh, and apparently the old lady in front of me called the sheriff when they were tearing around her place and they weren't interested in doing anything: Told her by law they can come on our property to retrieve their animal, which is correct. However, they are still responsible for property damage, or at least should be.

Oh goodness. I haven't checked the thread in a bit. Sorry for all the animal craziness! I hope the raccoon has been trapped. I would be furious about the damage those idiots let their steer cause!

SilkieBaby - there was no reason for the people on the auction page to treat you so rudely! What kind of eggs were you bidding on?

Chickenbelle - thank you for sending me pics of the BLRW chicks! The ones of the fuzzy splash came through so tiny that I couldn't really make anything out lol! I'm happy you posted pics of the Basque and Trump- they made me smile!

I hope everyone's having a good weekend! I went out this morning to take care of the birds and one of my BLRW chicks looked odd from across the yard- kind of looked liked it was missing feathers on its head, so I went catch it. Um, wow. It seems unaffected and is very active and eating and drinking, but wow. What could have happened to this baby? I cleaned it up and covered the wound with a protectant. Do you think it's going to heal? I really think a bit of its skull is showing. :(

Hey guys, could any of you offer a reference as to where I could find a black copper maran breeder near south LA? Or someone in LA willing to ship? I'm open to eggs and chicks. Even older hens and Roos if I can't find anyone else. Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure who here has them, but if you can't find them locally I know a few people out of state who would ship eggs and have very nice birds.

I'll be sure to let you know if I can't find anyone. I know they are a relatively scarce breed. I'm interested in starting a foundation flock, so it will definitely be nice to find some nice stock. There is no one in a large radius of me, that I know of, that has them. I'd like to bring some diversity to my area. My biggest concern is shipping eggs, because I know for a fact my local post office is not very gentle with egg shipments.

Boy do I feel like a total ***, I have been joining and watching some of the "auctions" that are going on, on Facebook. A lot of these people know each other personally so right away I felt like the odd one out. i'd asked around about some eggs at first and got a few blah answers so I finally decided to actually bid on one of the guys that I had noticed got a lot of good reviews. Well before I bid him and his friends were chit chatting and going back and forth with funny friendly comments. after I bid....nothing....and I waited....nothing. So I thought maybe I did something wrong or possibly intruded on a friend to friend big idk..so I retracted like a fool! I didn't know I felt stupid really. so I seen they were some more comments about the bid so checked them out and they did mention that some bid and took it off apparently. so I commented that I had felt I did something wrong or intruded and made a joke. then I scrolled down...the admin made a not so nice comment about me retracting. and said I was banned permently. omg I wanted to wanted to cry I know that sounds stupid but I really didn't mean to offend anyone. I just really felt like I was over stepping or I didn't do it right. So now i'm pretty much black balled. I feel soo flippin small right now. and idk why. thanks for reading if you did. just wanted to vent.
That's exactly what would happen to me, all good intentions, quickly pressing the retract of the bid because I thought I had done something wrong. I agree that if they can't understand that, then who wants to deal with them anyway?????
