"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I just have to say that this is so great! I wish there was more places that would try to do this type of feed. At least as an option.

I just quit buying anything from one of the feed stores close to me as I have come across some very objectionable practices (to me at least). The owner insisted to me recently that medicated feed is the best and all the best are medicated. Hmmmm.......I didn't want to medicate my meaties and he just wouldn't listen. I usually only get feed at this store on an emergency last minute basis. I have always for years gone much further out of my way to another place to get feed always seems much fresher and they give better and more eggs. And then the other day I looked at their 'chicks'. I decided to just look on a whim since I would like to have more of the Houdans. The chickens were at least 10-12weeks old. CRAMMED into tiny cages that would have been sufficient up to maybe 2weeks. It was a very hot afternoon and only a fan in the window with the sun blazing in. I felt like I needed to rescue 100 chickens :( It has made me so sad and I have been thinking about that for the last 3-4 days since I saw that. I had gone in just to grab a bale of hay and didn't even get that.

Sorry to vent about that (and I won't name any place of business) but those poor pullets have me upset and I told my husband to that we will NOT be giving them any of our business anymore! I will just have to be doubly sure that I never run out of anything.
I know just what you mean. I got my Black Stars at a feed store. They were only 3 weeks old, but they were so crammed in together and pecking each other that the chicks were scabbie and bloody and bald and we called them our buzzards for a while until they feathered out and are now beautiful and sweet. They would also screech if I got near them for a long time. I sort of felt like I rescued them and I didn't want to think about all the ones I left behind.

Hey guys gotta quick question, I picked up some silkie chicks today in Hammond (they are so cute but i'll get to that later) and then we had to go to Houma for a last minute b-day party , somehow during the trip one of them got trappled or something idk. but his little leg is kinda out to the side and he's favoring the other. could this be spraddle leg or whatever they call it. I was in such a hurry to pick them up and go that I didn't even notice if he was like that before but about 99% percent sure that it happened during my trip. what is the best thing to treat him/her?

Good morning everyone . I hope that everyone had a great weekend. It rained my way a little yesterday but it wasn't too bad. This weekend consisted of cutting the grass, cleaning the yard, the start of cleaning the coops, stalls, chicken houses, rabbit pens, waterers and feeders. The baby lambs are always at my feet, so it's hard to move from place to place without me tripping over them. I finally cleaned out the garage and all 3 brooders that were in there. I will be able to move the pea, poults and keets from inside the house to the garage. I'm thinking about putting the remaining 2 older keets with the 50 chicks that I have but I have to make sure that they won't be able to fly through the vents. Those little suckers are quick and fast. They remind me a hummingbirds at how quick they can fly and in what direction they fly.

The peas have only laid 3 eggs since I sold those 10 eggs. I guess they are going through the egg laying cycle again. The boys are dropping a few feathers and I am collecting the feathers. If I don't sell these lonely 3 pea eggs, (I know that I said that I wouldn't but.......) I will be forced to put them in the incubator. I can't see losing these eggs. I will probably put some guinea eggs in the incubator to fill it up. The first 4 pea eggs of the season that I placed in the incubator yielded 3 hatched peas and 1 egg didn't hatch. I cracked open the egg and found that there was a fully developed pea inside but for some reason it didn't hatch. I'm not sure what happened. So, I 'm happy to know that all 4 eggs were fertile. So the boys are doing their jobs. :D

I was looking at the 50 chicks that I got for free at the feed store and they are growing out nicely. Looks like I will have either RIR or New Hampshire Reds, Golden Comets, Barred Rocks, White Plymouth Rocks and then I have these chicks that I'm not totally sure. It think I know the breed but I'm not sure. Anyone want to guess at what breed these are?

Get a bandaid. Tape around both legs with the white pad in the center of the legs. That will hold it in the proper place until it heals. He will walk a little funny, but it will hold it where it needs to be. Let me see if I can find a pic.

Boy do I feel like a total ***, I have been joining and watching some of the "auctions" that are going on, on Facebook. A lot of these people know each other personally so right away I felt like the odd one out. i'd asked around about some eggs at first and got a few blah answers so  I finally decided to actually bid on one of the guys that I had noticed got a lot of good reviews. Well before I bid him and his friends were chit chatting and going back and forth with funny friendly comments. after I bid....nothing....and I waited....nothing. So I thought maybe I did something wrong or possibly intruded on a friend to friend big idk..so I retracted like a fool! I didn't know I felt stupid really. so I seen they were some more comments about the bid so checked them out and they did mention that some bid and took it off apparently. so I commented that I had felt I did something wrong or intruded and made a joke. then I scrolled down...the admin made a not so nice comment about me retracting. and said I was banned permently. omg I wanted to wanted to cry I know that sounds stupid but I really didn't mean to offend anyone. I just really felt like I was over stepping or I didn't do it right. So now i'm pretty much black balled. I feel soo flippin small right now. and idk why. thanks for reading if you did. just wanted to vent.

I am so sorry you had to experience that! :hugs I often feel like the odd one out so I understand how you must of felt! It was over reactive to just straight ban you after you explained that you were unsure if your bid was welcome. Don't feel welcome? Fine. We ban you. That's just awful.  If that's how they act, your better off without their eggs!

I agree.

Sorry that you had to experience that. You're better off without that group.

What a bunch of (things I can't say on here). How nice of them to make you feel welcome. I'd tell em where they can put their eggs.

Hey LA chick lovers!  I am fairly new to this site and thought I would say hi!

:frow

I live right smack in the middle of the state!  We have kept chickens as pets for many years for eggs.  But this year we have done some meat chickens and have a whole new young(12week) flock.  Our few old ladies that were left just weren't putting out any eggs anymore.

Between the chick my girl brought home from school, and the ones she picked out at the feed store to keep it company, and the 1 "Rare" chick that came with our meaties.........we now have 4 roosters :/  and that's not considering what the 3 silkies are.  I really hope they are all hens!  Adorable little fluff balls that they are.

So we have our main egg layers 2 Americaunas(that's what the feed store calls them, who knows what they really are called.  But they lay green or light tan eggs) and 3 Red Sex Link.  I really think I may need more full size egg layers, but time will tell.  I am used to having more like 10-12.

The Others......This time my girl picked out quite a few kinds of chickens we have never had before.  So it has been a neat experience seeing them grow and develop.  She picked out 2 little matching chicks that we thought were Bantams but which turn out to be Mottled Houdans.  And a pair no less.  That's where 1 rooster came into the mix.  The 3 Silkies, 1 black and 2 grey.  1 White Frizzle hen(is that a frizzled Cochin???)  and 1 white Cochin Roo(Ugh!  The most adorable little cotton ball on the planet!!!)  And lastly is the big roo that came from her school science teacher.  He started out as a tiny little black chick with a white spot.  It seems that he is a Barred Rock Roo........but as there are quite a few kinds of black and white barred breeds......I will reserve final opinion for awhile until he is a bit older.

So now for questions on my mind.
I am thinking of breeding the Houdans(which I refer to as Who Dats ;) for dual purpose.  But I would need to incorporate at least a few more hens.  I would love to get good stock and it would be great if it came from within the state.
I am pressing little miss to be in 4-H to show some of these chickens.  She wants to keep ALL the roos!!!  At least one is going, the extra that came with the meaties.  But I know nothing about showing poultry at the Rapides Parish Fair.  I'm sure there is a simple process or place to find the info.
BYC is a terrible place to read about chicken maladies!!!  I now am wondering if some of these youngins have mites!  LOL!

I don't know that I can contribute much knowledge to this thread, I just have a farm in my backyard.  SHHHHH!  Don't tell the neighbors those are meaties back behind the shed!

:welcome Glad to have you hear.

Mike, they are whites.

Bet you FINALLYgot your white male, you lucky dog! :thumbsup
I'm setting eggs next week; everything I gather between now & then. My turn! :fl

I hope so. Out of 3 peas, I gotta have a male huh? :)

Good luck on setting your eggs. How many eggs do you think the girls may lay during that time? If you want some more to throw in there, let me know and I can give you some freebies if you don't have enough. I really don't want to incubate more eggs because I'm so tired. PM and let me know if you want some of the eggs over here and I can drive them to you.
