"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Nice thought huh? Considering we live in mosquito highway.

She's such a ray of sunshine...

Shouldn't you be sleeping???  I got some of those vanilla car thingies.  Let's see if they work.  :fl
Nobodies "spots" on their combs looks any worse, if anything LouLou's (blue hen in picture) is looking better.

Hopefully, after being up at 3am, you're sleeping in.

Didn't you know... she has no time to sleep!

You're right about that. No time to sleep. Seems like there's always something to do. I have to bottle 25 gallons of wine and I ain't looking foward to that. And taste tasting as I bottle is not advised.

Mosquitoes = Dry Pox

Dry Pox could lead to Wet Pox

Wet Pox could lead to Death

Not good at all. I would strongly suggest that all Louisiana chicken owners vaccinate all birds who have not already been exposed to dry pox. Not sure if you all have seen what wer pox looks like but it's a monster. I can post a link to a thread here on BYC of a BYC friend who's chickens have wet pox and I gave her my care plan and what to do. Very graphic pics.

I will find the link now and copy for you all.

Shhhhhh. It would be YOU who would notice the time. I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep right away. Yes, I slept in until 7:00am. Had to get up and get the gumbo going. The pea chick makes the crazy whistling noise that is kinda irritating. Really can't sleep with that noise. I have baby chicks and the pea chick in the kitchen so that I can keep a close eye on them.

Let me know how the mosquito control works. Keep an eye on the birds that gave scabs. Monitor inside of their mouth for yellow areas. Also monitor their eye area. If you see problems let me know and I will tell you what to do.

Good luck.

I always look at the time. The website must originate out of the west coast, because the time always shows two hours earlier than our time. I'm a nerd about some of the things I notice.

Gumbo....yummmm. That sounds good. Now we just need the cooler weather to go along with it!

For the pea chick, you should get a "noise maker", something like Homemedics brand, and play either a quiet "white noise" or rainfall.

I hope it doesn't turn into anything more. I'll let you know. Thanks for the help.

I have doubled my egg production, maybe tripled!! At least one more is laying. Last night I found a rounder egg that was a slightly different color than the other two in the tray under the roost. I think it might be a third hen.

Last week I told my husband that we "got an egg"! He said, "Great!! We have 15 chickens and we got ONE egg." Men can be such turds!

So, a couple of days ago I said, " We are very efficient. I have doubled egg production"! I don't know if he saw the humor, but my 8 and 12 year old started laughing.

What do you vaccinate with? I will start researching now. I probably need to be sure we don't have it before I vaccinate against it.

Fowl pox vaccine. It is sold online at Jeffers.

I'm having one of those mornings...

One of the hens ate one of the eggs this morning. All that was left was a little yolk and ants had found it. I pulled out the bedding, cleaned the yolk and dusted with DE and poultry dust for ants. Is this something I should be concerned about? I don't want to create a problem. Could there be some type of deficiency that caused the hen to do this? Am I COMPLETELY paranoid right now??!!??

Any ideas...?

Thanks,

Laurie

Mosquitoes also bring Equine encephalitis which kills chickens as well as horses. Their is a relatively new invasive species of mosquito called the Asian Tiger mosquito (came in through tires from China) in the state that is active 24 hours a day too (females) and are known to be aggressive biters....what fun.

I have to FIND things to occupy myself when Superman is out of town for work. I hate when he is gone! And I don't know what co-depent means, hahaha!

So yesterday I made a most delicious ham and bean soup and pressure canned some of it for later. 5 quarts. Planted a row of Sugar Snap Peas too. Carrots are sprouting! Yay! We are going for an early lunch with a friend, then home for some cleaning cooking, gardening (whichever will keep me occupied) and FOOTBALL!!!

GO BIG RED!!!

GEAUX LSU!!!!

Hope ya'll have a nice day!
