Also, for anyone in the New Orleans area....our club is holding a swap tomorrow from 9-1 at the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds in Covington (off 190 and Magee Streets). It is free to the public, and vendors pay only $5.00 to set up. We usually get every sort of poultry and fowl as well as rabbits, goats, mini-pigs, donkeys, and even mini-horses every now and again: All small livestock is welcome and set-up is from 8 -8:55 AM.
We are under a covered livestock arena that stays fairly cool even in the heat of the day, plus no worries about rain or sunburns! We have bathrooms on site as well as a mobile BBQ truck that serves up hamburgers and hot dogs.
We will have a raffle for some nice prizes: Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 and you can enter to win only the items you want.

Also our club, the Gulf Coast Poultry Fanciers Association, will have our youth coordinator there with some of the birds members have graciously donated. We have started a program where any child living in our membership area who participates in 4-H or FFA and completes the Louisiana Ag Centers Quality Assurance and Ethics program online for poultry is eligible to apply for free show quality birds: We do ask that they become a junior member of the club, which is a very small cost. The member who donates the birds, will make themselves available to the youth via email and phone for guidance and mentoring should the child or parent like to do that.

I'm having one of those mornings...

One of the hens ate one of the eggs this morning.  All that was left was a little yolk and ants had found it.  I pulled out the bedding, cleaned the yolk and dusted with DE and poultry dust for ants.  Is this something I should be concerned about?  I don't want to create a problem.  Could there be some type of deficiency that caused the hen to do this?  Am I COMPLETELY paranoid right now??!!??   Any ideas...?

Mosquitoes also bring Equine encephalitis which kills chickens as well as horses. Their is a relatively new invasive species of mosquito called the Asian Tiger mosquito (came in through tires from China) in the state that is active 24 hours a day too (females) and are known to be aggressive biters....what fun.

I am very familiar with the tiger mosquito. I posted a pic of one that I killed when it landed on me a couple years ago. I HATE those things!!!!!

 I have to FIND things to occupy myself when Superman is out of town for work.  I hate when he is gone!  And I don't know what co-depent means, hahaha!

So yesterday I made a most delicious ham and bean soup and pressure canned some of it for later.  5 quarts.  Planted a row of Sugar Snap Peas too.  Carrots are sprouting!  Yay!  We are going for an early lunch with a friend, then home for some cleaning cooking, gardening (whichever will keep me occupied) and FOOTBALL!!!

Is there anything I can do to discourage whoever's doing this? I check for eggs frequently. I'm trying to learn what their schedule might be, so that the eggs aren't just sitting there.
This was the first time it happened, so fingers crossed!!

If any of you have never vaccinated for pox there are great videos on YouTube. If I can do it anyone can do it. If you live anywhere around the Baton Rouge area I will be happy to come help you. I got mine from Jeffers. The smallest amount I could find was for 1000 chickens. Lol. Once it is mixed you have to use and throw away. I vaccinated mine on April 29, so I have some time before I do it again, but I'll post and if anyone wants to vaccinate on the same day, I'll mix, do mine, then come over and do yours

Are they allowed ample amounts of oyster shell or other calcium extras? Sometimes every once in a while one will lay a soft-shelled egg and you will hardly ever find them as they will almost always eat it. This is nature at it finest to put the nutrients back in to keep on keeping on and all you will find is the results. Chronic egg eating is another concern though then it is something serious.
