Forgive me for skipping from pg. 270 to here. I have a question about pox. Unfortunately I did not vaccinate my girls for it due to ignorance. Last Wednesday night we had a preditor attack. One of my four girls was stolen, and another was left plucked in several places, but all superficial wounds. She has been slow to recover, and in the past few days I have noticed black spots on her comb and wattle, and the area behind her ears has gone whitish. I thought they were wounds until today. One of my healthy girls has now got a black patch on her crown! My vet says a dormant pox virus can take hold after a weakening in a bird, so I'm terrified this is what is going on. How can I bring them through, and can I ever introduce new birds into thier environment?

Fowl pox is spread by mosquitoes. First we need to know if it is wet or dry pox to give to good advice. Look up both and look at the pictures or give us a picture so we can see. This involves looking in the mouth as well. Kuntrygirl should be on here first thing in the morning and she has a great recovery plan for both. Either way you want to get them on a broad spectrum antibiotic to prevent secondary infections that are common. Dry pox is not a big deal as long as it doesn't turn into wet or have a secondary infection. Wet pox is a long hard road to recovery but can recover. You can get new birds after these heal but I would suggest having them vaccinated first.

I have always been "poor". We made do with what we had but didn't have extra luxury items. This has lead me to being cheap even if I have a little extra in the bank. I used to just shop around for great deals, but now I have started the price matching thing. Someone gave me a free copier/printer/fax/scanner combo and extra paper because the ink cost too much and they bought a new one. Well I went on Ebay and found a 2 pack of the inks (re-manufactured) for $8 with free shipping and started printing out ads for all over the state. Walmart honors anything within driving distance and I assured them that I will drive anywhere for a really good deal. I am nice and have everything in order with the ad before checkout but still need a csm turn key because the savings are always over 50%. They seem to remove a lot of sale items about the time the ad comes out, that's when I go to the poor people working the meat dept and ask them to pull it from the back. Super 1 was my favorite when I lived near one. They had pilsbury biscuit 4 pack 10 ct tubs on sale for $0.01 because they were soon to be out of date. I bought 4 pallets (all they had) of them for $9.66. Since I didn't have the freezer space I stopped at every house that looked like they had kids and gave a lot of them away. After I explained that you could freeze them many people took them. It was summertime 2 years ago and what kid doesn't like biscuits? They took a copy of my receipt and posted it on their wall because of the savings. They were going to throw all that good food away if no one bought it. Isn't that a shame, food banks would be more than willing to take donations but most stores don't think about that.

Ron, I don't know what you do for a living, but there is an abundance of ways to give back in every day life. Whether the scale is grand or small it counts for the same in the overall outcome that results from the spark of simple actions. Maybe it's just being nice or seeming concerned for a person having a bad day. Maybe it's going outside of policies when you know you can for a certain individual. Every persons reactions in every day life, whether big or small, make a HUGE difference in someone's life.q

Your extra fruit is a huge deal to whoever is receiving it! I figure if I was lucky enough to find the deal, than I can share it so someone else can be lucky enough to get food on their table for the first time in who knows how long. I retired young and got bored. My mother is talking about early retirement because of her health. This would force me to carry her more than I do now as she doesn't have enough saved and is too young for social security. I made a deal with her, she can retire and move in with me if she watches the kids and does the shopping so I can return to work (workaholic). Soon I will be able to teach her how to shop like that and she has a good heart so I know she will continue helping others. It does take a lot of time but I think it is worth it.
