"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I thought that I was the only one that did that too.

Oh my gosh!!! I am not alone! My kids get soooo embarrassed!

I have always been "poor". We made do with what we had but didn't have extra luxury items. This has lead me to being cheap even if I have a little extra in the bank. I used to just shop around for great deals, but now I have started the price matching thing. Someone gave me a free copier/printer/fax/scanner combo and extra paper because the ink cost too much and they bought a new one. Well I went on Ebay and found a 2 pack of the inks (re-manufactured) for $8 with free shipping and started printing out ads for all over the state. Walmart honors anything within driving distance and I assured them that I will drive anywhere for a really good deal. I am nice and have everything in order with the ad before checkout but still need a csm turn key because the savings are always over 50%. They seem to remove a lot of sale items about the time the ad comes out, that's when I go to the poor people working the meat dept and ask them to pull it from the back. Super 1 was my favorite when I lived near one. They had pilsbury biscuit 4 pack 10 ct tubs on sale for $0.01 because they were soon to be out of date. I bought 4 pallets (all they had) of them for $9.66. Since I didn't have the freezer space I stopped at every house that looked like they had kids and gave a lot of them away. After I explained that you could freeze them many people took them. It was summertime 2 years ago and what kid doesn't like biscuits? They took a copy of my receipt and posted it on their wall because of the savings. They were going to throw all that good food away if no one bought it. Isn't that a shame, food banks would be more than willing to take donations but most stores don't think about that.

I'm the same as you. I see a lot of stuff on Craigslist for free. Even if I can't use it, I get it and give it to someone else. I hate to see good stuff go to waste.

I LOVE Super 1. That is my favorite store. I just stopped by there this morning and got a couple of deals. I try to tell people about savings like that and those expiration dates. A lot of people can't believe it but it's true.

I always check the "clearance" isle at the store before I buy anything. Before our hens were laying I could go to Super 1 and get a dozen eggs for 79 cents. There was nothing wrong with them. They were from the cartons of broken eggs. I had always wondered what they did with those.
I very rarely buy anything at full retail price.

What kills me is that the deals are so great you know they are loosing money anyway. Why do they have to throw out the extras that don't sell and not donate it? Until they figure it out I will be racking up anytime I see a Super 1 and pass it on. A lot of people don't even notice those deals because they didn't plan on something not on their list. I go in a store with a sales list only and will compare the cost against what I know it is at other stores to see if it is worth it. Last Christmas I found 30 tubes of Colgate toothpaste in the walmart clearance isle (no price tag on them) and someone placed a whole bunch of $0.50 off coupons on top of them. Well the only price scanner we have is in the coffee isle on the other side of the store, I fought the crowd and found out they were only $0.50 before the coupon. Toothpaste is toothpaste and I don't don't care if they have decorations on the box, it still cleans your mouth. I have since found out by giving them away how many people don't have toothpaste as a mandatory on their list and don't buy it because of the costs. People were happy to get it and I was left a little confused. If I ever hit that again the whole town will have clean mouths.

That was one awesome biscuit deal!  :)  I recently figured out that my local Super 1 marks down their gallons of milk that are the day of expiration to $1.99.  I haven't gotten a bad tasting one yet!

Wednesday mornings between 8-11 am seem to hold the best deals for them. Always look back by the dairy first, that's where I always find my deals. I also got a pallet of those huge yogurt containers in plan, vanilla, and strawberry for $0.05 each. It still had 2 weeks before expiring and I told everyone to freeze it. Same comment all around: Can you freeze yogurt? Won't it spoil? Then I would ask have you ever heard of frozen yogurt? It was like a light bulb for them Yea, I eat that...oh! You would be surprised what people won't buy because they think you can't freeze it. I used to buy milk like that too. I froze the extras but had to remember to shake it once after defrosting as milk does tend to separate in the process.

My mother is the only one that didn't like my biscuit haul. I was living out of state then and drove all the way to her house (2 doors down from me now) and filled her chest freezer (the size of my SUV). Mostly she hated how excited I was and kept trying to show her the receipt.

I also used to stock up on land o lakes? I think lunch meat often. It seemed that every 2 weeks they would have the 1lb package (normal $4.98) on sale for a dollar (overstock). Then most of the time they would have a manufactures coupon for $0.55 off one stuck to the package. That's $0.45 for a pound of lunch meat! What I didn't use for my household I donated to a local church that hosted a pick your own food bank. The food bank had a once per week limit and one full paper sack per person. People got to choose a certain number of each type of item reducing waste on something they wouldn't eat. They took no government funds and because of this, no names helping more people. A mother of 4 would get 5 bags! that you can survive on. This is why I liked giving them stuff for their shelves.

The biscuit score is FABULOUS !!!!!!!! I understand about the excitement. I'm the same way. It really is VERY exciting to find so much stuff on sale and to actually buy it for pennies. Well, if your mother can't appreciate your excitement, come and post your story and receipt here. We can definitely turn up the excitement channel. I love that kinda stuff.

I have been shopping at the Super 1 for so many years. The dairy section is the first place that I look . I think I posted that info on the frugal thread here on BYC last year about the dairy expiration.

I love getting the 1 gallon milk deals for $1.00. I think my biggest milk score was when I cleared the fridge section at Super 1 by buying 6 gallons of Organic Milk for $1.00. A couple weeks ago, I picked up on more organic milk. I don't drink milk that often, so I freeze the milk or I give it away to someone who needs food for their household. Here is what I picked up a couple weeks ago. As a matter of fact, I had the organic milk and granola for breakfast this morning.

This morning I picked up a couple things that I don't even eat but because it was so cheap ($0.25 each for horseradish), I couldn't pass it up. They only had 4 of these, so I bought all of them. And it is a nice little glass bottle and I can re-use it. :)

I have picked up on containers of yogurt for as low as $0.10.

There is also usually an aisle in Super 1 that has non-perishables on sale as well. Last year, I picked up boxes of Pumpkin Spice Tea (20 bags per box) that had been reduced to $0.25 per box. There were 8 boxes on the shelf, so I bought all of them and gave most of them away to my egg customers.

This was one of my shopping trips.

6 bags of salad @ $0.25 each = $1.50
2 bags of grapes @ $0.25 each = $0.50
1 bag of apples @ $0.50
4 cantaloupe @ $0.25 each = $1.00
1 bag of grapefruit @ $0.25
2 gallons of Organic orange juice @ $0.75 each = $1.50
4 bottles of salad dressing @ $0.25 each = $1.00
2 medium size containers of yogurt @ $0.25 each = $0.50

TOTAL PRICE for all of this was $6.75

In addition, in store sale on liquid laundry detergent (29 loads) 45.4 oz - regular price $4.00 was on sale for $0.97. I stocked up on 20. All of this was only $26.75. I bought the kind that is free of dyes and perfumes because I have sensitive skin.

On another trip, I also found packets of seasonings, marinades, etc for $0.10 - jars of peanut butter for $0.80 - spray cans of insecticides for $0.50 - large cans of juice for $0.25.

I have also bought large tubs of salsa and sour cream for $0.25.

There are times, when things are on sale and I don't even eat whatever it is, I still buy it and give it away to people. I have a few older neighbors that are on fixed income and sometimes have just enough to get buy. Just the other day, one of my neighbors told me that she has been going without coffee because she doesn't have enough money. Well, I saw in the Super 1 sales ad that Community Coffee is on sale, so I will pick up a couple bags for her to have.

People don't realize how the smallest act of kindness can go a long way with people. I often give away dozens of eggs to people that look like they may not have enough and you never know . A person may be so broke that they cannot buy a dozen of $2.00 eggs in the store, so the eggs that I give them may be their meal for the next couple days but they may never say anything and they shouldn't. But it's just the fact, that little acts of kindness like that can go a long way.

It's fun finding all this stuff. With all of our tips, it sounds like we could rack up on some stuff. :gig

Forgive me for skipping from pg. 270 to here. I have a question about pox. Unfortunately I did not vaccinate my girls for it due to ignorance. Last Wednesday night we had a preditor attack. One of my four girls was stolen, and another was left plucked in several places, but all superficial wounds. She has been slow to recover, and in the past few days I have noticed black spots on her comb and wattle, and the area behind her ears has gone whitish. I thought they were wounds until today. One of my healthy girls has now got a black patch on her crown! My vet says a dormant pox virus can take hold after a weakening in a bird, so I'm terrified this is what is going on. How can I bring them through, and can I ever introduce new birds into thier environment?

How is your girl doing? I think a few people have mentioned my thread and posted a link. I can walk you through this process and tell you how to try save her. And yes you can introduce other birds with no problem at all.

Tell me how is she doing today and what injuries has she sustained. Also tell me how she is eating and drinking. When I hear back from you with more details, I will provide you with care plan for her.

Good Luck.

Wow! What a great deal . What's awesome is how you gave some away. Kudos to you!! I Thought giving my extra fruit to the food bank was a big deal. I wish I had the time to give back in such a way.

Ron, I don't know what you do for a living, but there is an abundance of ways to give back in every day life. Whether the scale is grand or small it counts for the same in the overall outcome that results from the spark of simple actions. Maybe it's just being nice or seeming concerned for a person having a bad day. Maybe it's going outside of policies when you know you can for a certain individual. Every persons reactions in every day life, whether big or small, make a HUGE difference in someone's life.q

Profound. Well said. :thumbsup

Your extra fruit is a huge deal to whoever is receiving it! I figure if I was lucky enough to find the deal, than I can share it so someone else can be lucky enough to get food on their table for the first time in who knows how long. I retired young and got bored. My mother is talking about early retirement because of her health. This would force me to carry her more than I do now as she doesn't have enough saved and is too young for social security. I made a deal with her, she can retire and move in with me if she watches the kids and does the shopping so I can return to work (workaholic). Soon I will be able to teach her how to shop like that and she has a good heart so I know she will continue helping others. It does take a lot of time but I think it is worth it.

You are so right! :thumbsup
