Jeff,

Are you saying that vaccinating for pox doesn't really help?? I thought your chickens couldn't get pox if they were vaccinated. Won't be the first or last time I had something wrong. Lol

No I said (in a round about way) "you can if you want to" LOL I don't one reason is I have literally hundreds of fowl here some I hardly ever see much less could catch. If you can't do all of them why bother you're not ridding/eliminating the entire place of it anyway, which is hard to do with wildlife bringing the stuff in every waking moment of the day. You have to do so every year too(annually) and my main reason is you will never ever will have immunity built up in a flock if you give them a shot every year. I prefer my flock to build natural immunity to every thing they may/WILL come into contact with. Folks don't realize what they bring in just from a trip to the feed store beside the wild birds that cover areas of miles and are in contact with the whole wide world.

Most breeders medicine cabinets contents consist of: a container of louse/mite powder and a hatchet. Mine, I do go so far as to have meds for coccidiosis for the youngun's here and do de-worm twice yearly at spring and fall. The rest is just good feed practices(routine/schedule), clean water daily, high vigor/healthy genetics in the flock. Only the strong survive just like they did a hundred years ago or out in the world Mother Nature provides them(survival of the fittest/natural selection) I don't have time to baby sit the weak or feeble .Must be able to stand on their own two feet here. Like breeds like!

good day all

I feel a little silly how excited I am about a green egg!

My youngest, Matthew was so excited, you would have thought it was Christmas morning. He then went out to the coop to get Edna and tell her what a good job she did. On a side note, I had to fuss at Matthew that he can't ride his bike while carrying the chickens!!!!! He has some that he always has tucked under his arm. My husband just shakes his head at us.

Good luck on your colored eggs...hope they come soon!

Morning folks. I can hear Winnie the Pooh today. Tut tut, looks like rain.

Congrats on the green egg! We love them. I'm very glad that both of my EE hens are laying green, not cream eggs. I have had some before that just laid cream eggs. Still good eggs though.

I made applesauce yesterday. I finally found apples for 99cents a lb. I forgot how good fresh homemade applesauce is! Going to make part of it into Apple butter today......maybe. Lol. I'm tired already.

I still have the Winnie the Pooh reference point as well. Maybe one day I will have to stop and think before I know exactly what you're talking about.

I LOVE homemade applesauce! Do you make yours on the stove or in a crockpot? I've seen the crockpot recipes, but have never tried them.

The honey crisp apples are out. They are my favorite!!!
Now, I'm going to have to make some applesauce...you had a really good idea!

My original intention was to make apple butter. My Mom used to make it when I was young. But the applesauce was so good we all kept going back for more. I cooked it in a real heavy stainless steel stock pot. Only because I was staying real close. I will probably start it like that though next time. Then transfer to the crock pot. That way I can reduce the initial volume first.

When will this rain ever stop??? 3 weeks now with only 2 days break total. I need to do some work outside!!! I can make apple sauce but never was able to make apple butter come to the right texture. Something about it, it is either too stiff or a little dry.

I have 6 on strike and its got me peeved lol

Time of year & late molt did me in I think. Their feed is top notch, they're happy healthy and I have only one trouble maker...I'm thinking that one hen (not a head hen either) is causing a lot of stress picking on everyone :( bully.

But for the time being I hope just the season change is stalling some girls.

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed recently.  Not able to read the few hundred posts that I've missed.

My chickens have slowed down production drastically in the past couple of weeks.  Nothing has changed in their diet.  Could this already be from shortening of days?

I was getting 2 dozen a week now I'm getting a half a dozen a week.

My thoughts:
1.  Calcium issue - feed oyster shells
2.  laying the yard - if they are, the dog is eating the eggs cause i don't find any evidence
3.  lack of protein - there have been no changed in diet except that the week before this happened my neighbors were giving them an excessive amount of watermelon rinds.
4.  Moody - the just don't feel like laying
5.  Molt - I haven't seen any unusual amount of feathers on the floor of the coop and none of them appear to have bald patches

any suggestions?
