"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

The fowl pox vaccine has to be administered every year. Good observations Celie & Jeff, who knows? maybe there is a connection. I always thought that most of us natives probably have had a mild case of West Nile & just didn't know it--- seems like every year about this time, this "flu-like" stuff goes around-- could it be mosquito transmitted?

Anyway, sad here tonight; I came home from work to find one of my chicks dead -- the one that the hen just let hatch on its' own - guess it couldn't get past that initial chill & weakness. I am so upset. I will never let hens set eggs again.

I put a stuffed animal in the box w/my lonely crying chick & it is finally settled down & sleeping. Tomorrow morning Jim will go to Petrus & buy a chick to keep this chick company. Geesh, I never thought I'd be going to buy a chick to be a companion for a chick. How bizarre is that?! A pet chick for a chick.

I would gladly give you one of the "designer" chicks that are starting to hatch, but you'd have to come to leesville. By the way the frizzle hen is the mother, so each will have a chance of being frizzled.

Wait a minute, when we talked about fowl pox vaccine on BYC last winter/spring, I was under the impression that the vaccine was a one time thing like small pox was! I knew new poults would have to be vaccinated after 3 weeks of age, but EVERY YEAR? Am I hearing this right? My older turkeys got dry pox last year this time, that I thought was ant bites, until I learned they were fowl pox. This year none of the turkeys from last year got any, and the younger ones, hatched this year only got a mild case, (because I left them alone and did not make them worse by cleaning them with hydrogen peroxide and antibacterial ointments), none of my chickens(they don't peck at the ants) ever got it! I thought it was a one time vaccine for the dry pox and they could still get the wet pox, but it would not be as severe!

The chickens that are exposed to the pox and survive will build an immunity they can have the virus and never show the symptoms it a herpes symplex there's bunches of them and a lot of don't ever show up and still can be passed on to other host.

theres a practice some breeders use to build immunity in their flocks is to get Turkey litter and spread it amongst their chickens houses. Turkeys carry a strain of Mareks that never show up in chickens but it exposes them enough for their systems to build up an immunity to the disease.

Ahhh....so sorry you lost one of your chicks. Tell Jim to get something interesting. Maybe a polish? Also, he can't just get one...he needs at least two!

A nice veggie garden can be a lot of work and good exercise and think about all those yummy veggies!

Oh its work all right! I weeded the new onion bed this morning and planted a few more in there. The first half of the peas are up. Carrots are up. Peanuts need to be dug. Peppers need harvested. It keeps me busy. Fresh and organic is the best!

Terri, sorry about that chick. Poor thing.

About the pox issue. My original flock I started with got dry pox way back when. I read up on it some at the time and decided to allow them to work it out. Everyone did just fine. It was a mild case for all of them. Mostly just spots on their comb. But now that I know its HERE.......I always am keeping an eye out for it on any new birds we bring. But since that one out break years ago we never have had another case of it. I don't know if they vaccinate the chicks they order at Petrus. But I didn't get my meaties vaccinated, they didn't get it either. But they aren't around for long though

I still have one pullet that is holding out on laying eggs. Its the Mottled Houdan hen. She sure is a weird bird. And I am still not sure what to think about this one sex link hen. She is just a bit "off" if you ask me. I have always thought so. Very strange behavior from that one. Her beak was slightly twisted when she was young, but them it straightened. But she is always the last one out, last one off the perch, last one to come eat the FF (when all the others are devouring it!). And she has this weird hoppity goofiness sometimes. She is molting right now so I have to give her credit for that. Maybe that attributes for part of the behavior. But that is now, she has always been weird and I am just scowling and taking mental notes at this point. Once we get her through this molting we will see if her behavior improves and then see what her egg laying is like at that point as well.

Good morning peeps.

Sorry to hear about the chick Terri. It's always sad when you lose a little one. It never gets easy.

Yea for the burn ban lift. I've been burning all weekend trying to run the skeeters away.

No matter if your political affiliation, or beliefs...
I believe....

1. If Obama Care (right or wrong) is around...then it should apply to ALL Americans ( IE... SENATE...no exceptions)

2. If the government is shut down and essential personnel are expected to work without pay, then ALL government officials ( IE... SENATE...) should work without pay.

I am tired of hearing how things will impact Americans, well, except for the Senators...well...except for the 1000 plus people that Obama gave special health care exemptions to...

Just sayin...
