I don't have pumpkins, this year, but lots of huge sweet tators. Will they work, like they do in pies, as a substitute?

Oh yes I love me some sweet tater pie more so than punkin pie anyday I like them both but will always eat the sweet tater one first,

Ps they don't have ladders for them though. you have to drag a cross-tie all over the patch before you dig those things "to mash all the air outta them" per Grandaddy it seems he always said thats what he was always forgetting to do/shouldve done before he dug them that year(it was TOO late) already, LOL

I too have a rather hefty feed bill, but finally have been breaking pretty even by selling rabbits and turkeys and ducks, but for the winter, unless people want to buy a lot of turkey eggs, I don't know? Since the hay, at my local feed store is so lousy and I don't trust letting the animals eat it, because I often see bundles in the open, that it may have gotten wet and will mildew, I have been leaving patches in the pastures unmowed, until it seeds and the turkeys harvest the seeds. I call them my "crop circles" every week or so, on a very dry day, I will cut it with a week whacker and gather a small trailer full, store it in the barn and feed it to the rabbits, who love it and cuts my feed bill in half for the rabbits. I have a lot of meat rabbits. Now that fall is on us, the grass isn't growing as fast. We have Bahaya (probably not spelled right) grass all over these parts and we planted Bermuda mixed in. I was wondering, where to get some good feed hay for my furry friends, when Hubby walked in today and said that the neighbor, who owns a couple acres of empty pasture next to us, said we could have all his field for hay. Now to get his dad not to bush hog it before we start harvesting it! It is Bahaya with some weeds mixed in, but the rabbits won't mind that. The stuff at the feed store is OK for the nest boxes, but I wouldn't use it for feed. Last year, when I only had a few rabbits, our friend who owns a horse stable about 10 miles away, would sell us some of his, but he has taken in more horses to stable and I have a lot more rabbits now, so I wouldn't ask. Besides, being right next to me, I can cut only 4 days worth at a time and tote it to the rabbits in my little trailer behind my golf cart! Problem solved!! LOL Now if I can only get a field of turkey feed???? LOL

You can sow those fields in Kentucky 31 Fescue it will be good for the winter time I found the best price at TSC here you might find different around your area IDK but its worth it to have winter grass for sure (google it)

I don't know where to start so much has happened around here. I guess I'll start with the most important problem. One of my hens

has a problem she is unable to pass her egg. After noticing she was not eating and drinking I started to worry. I noticed her in the

nesting box this morning. I could tell she still wasn't eating and drinking. Went to feed store and bought meal worms. When I came home hours later she was still in nesting box and a hen was on top of her in the same box. I got the other hen off of her. I opened the meal worms she ate quite a few so that made me feel a little better. I thought maybe she was broody so I stood her up no egg when she stood up she was weak took a few steps and layed back down. I started to feel a little panicked so came in and started to look up her symptoms. I can feel the egg when I put a small amount of pressure on the egg on her left side she had pain. so after that I looked up how to treat her. So I brought her in did a warm soak and massaged her bottom half which she enjoyed and seemed more like her self. After soak I looked at her vent I don't think she has layed before her vent is so small. I put gloves on and lubed up I inserted my finger I couldn't feel the egg she was pushing with no luck. So I dried her off tried to get her to drink . She kept trying to push it out with no luck. I'll try again in the morning praying she makes it over night. I brought her inside so she would be warm and not use her energy to stay warm. she laid down in the box and went rite to sleep. Has anyone had this problem? I'm open to any help offered . I feel if she can't lay this egg tomorrow she will die. She is the hen I'm most attached to. Pam

Pam, I am probably no help at all, since I have no experience with this problem, but if you can feel the egg with your finger through her vent, what do you think would happen if you just broke the egg and let her pass it? It could be a double or triple yolker and just too big or her to pass? Just a thought.

I can feel the egg on the out side with my hand. when I put my finger in I did't feel the egg. From what I read on the net if you break the egg the shell can be sharp enough to damage the uterus. It may come to taking my chances that way. The treatments I've saw on u-tube or read about all use heat I'm hoping spending the night inside and using heat will help her get it out. Pam

I sure hope she can pass it by morning, poor thing! If it wasn't so late, one of the others would probably have some good ideas and could be more helpful! I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you and her!

My Grandmothers Pumpkin bread Recipe
3 cups sugar
31/2 cup sifted flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. nut meg
1 cup cooking oil
4 eggs beaten ( fresh eggs)
2/3 cup water
2 cups pumpkin
1/2 chopped pecans or walnuts
sift together all dry ingredients make a well add remaining ingredients
mix until smooth pour into greased & floured loaf pans
Bake at 350 for 1 hour cool wrap well & freeze so it will not crumble when sliced
I have made the recipe many times & have froze the bread for later use eating pumpkin bread in the middle of the summer.
enjoy not only eating it but the awesome smell in your home while its baking
