"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Heat -- I do not know which cold or heat. The worst heat I was in was all most 2 weeks at 122 during the day, down to the high 90's and low 100 at night in the city with all the asphalt. You can not walk a dog in the summer, it burns their paws. You will see bloody paw prints. You think ow humidity, a dry heat. Wrong, the summer monsoon, 3 did get temp and high humidity. I am dreading the heat and humidity, it will be different. I will have to get used to it. I will not be able to afford close to the. Ocean, to catch the breeze from the gulf. I can use misters here, I do not think that will work. So shade, fans and shallow water for the chickens to stand in. I am so thankfully New Jersey Giants were mentioned. I was hoping to get a couple. But you are right, :( Some times I can't Add 2 and 2. Of course it will be to hate for them.

Sense I do not know how far north I may end up, cold is something else. I just can not handle cold, when temps I get below zero... Below freezing is bad enough. I used to use a stock tank heater in my dogs drinking water. I found out you can not use it in side because even at 33 degrees steam comes off and ices every thing, and cold goes to the bone.

When you get here and all set up I have100*+ humidity proof and so far 15* proof chickens here that require no type of air conditioning that is no heat in the cold and no fans in the summer(proven) LOL The problem lies in folk spoiling and making it to where they HAVE to have heat and cool, more of that common sense thingy that was in discussion last week

I'm counting on you CatDaddy. My attitude about trees and plants has been "bless you, my dear plants, but the choice is yours, live if you will. " of course, my animals are not the same as plants and trees and I would die a thousand deaths if any of my animals suffered, but if they are able to be strong in heat and cold pleases me. I am happy to say that Primrose's water didn't freeze last night at all, I was concerned bec she doesn't have the heat of other chickens to help her stay warm. The water for the Amercaunas had a little ice crust on the edges, but the water for the rabbits and black stars was frozen solid. Hummmm. Only one more extremely cold night. I just don't want my babies to suffer. If we had extremely cold days for as long as we have extremely hot days, CatDaddy, I would have to choose hot over cold. I can't believe I have said that bec I have always been a cold over hot person. I think I have come over to your side. Move over. Lol

I hear ya well everything here is froze up the pump the all the waterers so it'll be another long day of breaking out ice and refurbishing everything just like yesterday and yes mee too on the dadgum cold (I don't get how folks can choose it over heat) I've never had my hands and feet get where I can't used them in the summer time if I get too hot I take a break (outside) then go on if I get too dammed cold(you can't take a break outside) then go on LOL It don't work that way.

With gloves and "proper" winter clothes, my hands and feet are still burning when I'm outside. I've put off doing stalls until later. All animals are cared for, so I'm done outside for a little while!!! This weather is terrible!! I'll take the heat any day!!

Wish some of y'all lived closer. Ron spent a couple of hours picking our oranges, lemons, and limes. My table is full of citrus. I guess we'll have orange every way you can think of for the next month. Pam

That is so great to have all of that right in your backyard. I planted a few trees last year but I"m not sure if any will grow. Lucky for me, I know other people that have trees of all sorts and are always wanting to give away fruit. I picked 15 gallons of lemons this weekend from someone who lives down the road. I didn't even put a dent in his trees. So, I may go back this weekend. He just wants the lemons GONE. :)

They are doing better than I am. I have them all inside the house until the cold weather passes. :hide

Wow! 100 meaties in your house. Break out the wine, that sounds like a party. Lol

Yes. I did have a nice glass of muscadine wine last night. I slept like a broiler under a heat lamp after eating my tummy full of fermented feed. :lau

Hi all!! I'm Shauna and I don't have chickens yet. My friend gave me her old coop and I'm super excited to get started. I have been reading and researching every day. I'm currently in Leesville. I would love any tips y'all have about raising chickens in Louisiana and I hope you'll be patient with my many questions. :)

Is there anyone in the Lafayette area that can do an interview with KATC TV RIGHT NOW to talk about how you are keeping your animals warm during this cold time? They called me to interview me at my farm but I"m at work and I can't do it and they need the interview to be done RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT now. Anyone?
