"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi all!! I'm Shauna and I don't have chickens yet. My friend gave me her old coop and I'm super excited to get started. I have been reading and researching every day. I'm currently in Leesville. I would love any tips y'all have about raising chickens in Louisiana and I hope you'll be patient with my many questions. :)

Good morning! Glad to see you. We have a great group of people who are patient and always willing to help.

Hello and welcome to the La-yers and BYC from your (metaphorical) neighbor in Leesville!

The water hoses started freezing at 6:00 PM last night. I was scrambling to water last night before the water froze. As the water was shooting out the hoses, it was freezing immediately.

I set the camp fires up last night and I loved burning. That was my therapy last night. :D

Thanks guys! Well, here are some of my questions/concerns so far:
1) The coop is used. Should I clean it? And how? The roost is covered but there's a section of it with no roof(just chicken wire). Am I supposed to put litter(haven't decided on pine shavings or sand yet) in the uncovered part?
2) I have picked the breeds I want to start with: (2)EEs, (2) Barred Plymouth Rock. I am bummed that even the online hatcheries have minimums of 15 chicks this time of year, so I'm waiting to see where I can get the chicks I want. I want all hens.
3) I am SO afraid of snakes. How do I keep them out???

I'm sure there are more but I will leave it at that for now. Bugglesmommy-You are in Leesville? :)

I hear ya well everything here is froze up the pump the all the waterers so it'll be another long day of breaking out ice and refurbishing everything just like yesterday and yes mee too on the dadgum cold (I don't get how folks can choose it over heat) I've never had my hands and feet get where I can't used them in the summer time if I get too hot I take a break (outside) then go on if I get too dammed cold(you can't take a break outside) then go on LOL It don't work that way.

Seriously, EVERYONE here loves to help.

Here's pics of my used coop(I will eventually upgrade to something bigger and new):

Yes, I am in Leesville. The coop looks nice, but I do want to warn you that the wire used there is chicken wire. Predators like racoons, possums, dogs and coyotes and so on will go through it like butter. You may want to consider reinforcing it with something stronger like hardware cloth. I would definitely clean and disinfect it just in case.
