"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Also I think Guineas are kind of like Miracle Whip, you love them or hate them. I am going to admit now that there is NO way I am going to own a flock of those noisy buggers. Nope. Nuh-Uh. Not for me.

I wouldn't jump into that water without lots of research.

The feed store in town in Leesville carries chicks in the spring, and you can order chicks through them. Red and White I think It's called? I normally buy feed and such through them - I should knw the name by now.... :hide  Right next to a furniture store and across the street from the shopping center where Market Basket use to be... They get from Ideal. I *think* it's a 6 chick minimum - don't know about now in this weather, but you can ask. He will order whatever you want and pay when you pick them up. There are SO many fun, gorgeous, neat breeds, I'd really look them over before settling if you only want a few. By the way you should just go ahead and plan on falling victim to what we call "Chicken Math".....

I am interested in EEs, Gold-laced Wyandottes, Plymouth Barred Rock, Rhode Island Reds...What's chicken math? I want 4 total, 2 of them being EEs. I'm so excited to have beautiful eggs! An Olive Egger would be cool at some point. :)

Good to know! I don't want to disturb our neighbors with noise.

Our guineas free range around the place. They will occasionally go into the coop when I lock up the chickens for the night, but they always fly directly over our 6’ fence when I let them out in the mornings & spend the day roaming around.

You might also try the La. Market Bulletin - http://ldaf.louisiana.gov/portal/News/MarketBulletinCurrent/tabid/165/Default.aspx
There is a section for poultry in there (along w/everything else you can think of and some things you never thought of).

I don’t have the breeds you’re looking for or I’d hatch some for you. I’m surprised Petrus wasn’t more accommodating; they are usually knowlegable and nice-and good prices on their feed, which is fresh since they mill it themselves. I bought 2 EE’s from them a couple of months ago when I had a single chick hatch under a broody hen, to keep her company (yes, we bought pet chicks for our pet chick)!
Well, the girl working was busy painting, otherwise I think she would have been more helpful. I was very overwhelmed in there and felt uncomfortable because I know so little. So it was probably just me. :)

Thanks guys! Well, here are some of my questions/concerns so far:
1) The coop is used. Should I clean it? And how? The roost is covered but there's a section of it with no roof(just chicken wire). Am I supposed to put litter(haven't decided on pine shavings or sand yet) in the uncovered part?
2) I have picked the breeds I want to start with: (2)EEs, (2) Barred Plymouth Rock. I am bummed that even the online hatcheries have minimums of 15 chicks this time of year, so I'm waiting to see where I can get the chicks I want. I want all hens.
3) I am SO afraid of snakes. How do I keep them out???

I'm sure there are more but I will leave it at that for now. Bugglesmommy-You are in Leesville? :)

1. Yes, I would definitely clean it. I always use a mixture of bleach and water. As already stated, the chicken wire will not be strong enough to protect against predators. I have been using sand for a few years and I love it. I'm not big on shavings for an outside run.

2. You can always check your local feed store or Tractor Supply. They usually have pullets but not sure if they ever have EE's. You can get with someone you know to see if they would like to split an order with you.

3. Guineas will keep your snakes away.:hide

Thank you for the tip about hardware cloth. Awesome!!! We will replace the chicken wire. So in regard to the tractor. Our doesn't have wheels but it's moveable. So I should just leave the open part on grass and only put the sand on the inside? There's no bottom to either part. Should I put something else down before the sand? You guys are awesome. Thank you!!!
Depends on how often you plan to move it around. If it’s easy to move, just keep giving them access to fresh grass. If you plan to leave it where it is, after they eat the existing grass, put sand down.

For what it’s worth, ever since we got guineas, we’ve had no snakes. The only one we saw was one they were ripping to shreds. Our 4 guineas have the run of the place.

Yeah, I might see if someone wants to split an order with me. I have some work to do on my coop before getting chicks anyway. How long do chicks stay inside? Until they have feathers?

Good idea! If you want to order from Ideal through the local feed store let me know and I can pick a few chicks to order with you for minimum number. I have no problem with adding more.

(And yes the have EE's at Red & White (Mislabeled as Ameraucanas) from time to time.)

Omg. Did I tell y'all already? Sorry if this is a repeat, I don't think so lol
So I get a call last week for my pet lop rabbit Fluffybutt. (i know so original lol)

He is the sweetest rabbit I ever met and I've come across some sweethearts. We listed him at a ridiculous price figuring A. Nobody would buy him. I love him but he needs more love not to sit with meat rabbits wondering if he's next lol... And B. A high price paid *might* mean they'll take good care of him?

I got a call last week. From Cali. It was a movie director. :gig nope not kidding. They will be filming in baton rouge end if month and he is what they need they said to give to a lil boy actor as a gift in the movie...don't know what movie yet, they're secrets til filming or until I'm on a non-blab list. I will neva be on a non-blab list. Think I'm already on the "shhhh don't tell Christina yet she gets too excited over everything list"...
N e ways I sorta thought it was a joke. C'mon really? but got a call & emails today with paperwork. Seems borrowing an animal is a lot of paperwork. I suppose if it were a purebred or trained creature the movie company hurt or killed, things could go really bad...hence paperwork but its fluffybutt. He's been through cats, dogs, babies, kids, everything. Not scared of anything lol

So ya I am super excited we will be in the credits lmao :gig

Yes, there is a company that frequently sends out emails to animals owners wanting to use their animals in movies. They have emailed me several times but I live too far away. I wish I lived closer. :/ The movie was to be filmed in New Orleans from what he said. I thought it was a joke when I got the email as well. But it's not a joke. I think they get our information from our Craigslist ads.

Congrats !!!!!!!!!!!!
