Yes, last year there was a feed store somewhere near Baton Rouge that was giving away 10 baby chicks for every bag of feed that you purchased. I was already in Baton Rouge at my weekend class and my best friend text me and told me about the special. So, after class, I drove to that feed store and bought 5 bags of feed and left with 50 free chicks. I wanted to buy 10 bags of feed for 100 chicks but I didn't follow my first mind, which was the best thing that I could have done.

Someone on this thread knows the name of that feed store. I forgot the name of it.

I was just curious. I have never heard of a feed store doing that, but its a good marketing tool.

Anyone else order from Cackle or Ideal? Ideal is so close that the chicks would have less travel time. Which of course is great. There are some of the reviews are just people who did not pay attention to the fine print and you just have to disregard those kinds of reviews.

I ordered my broilers from Ideal. They are great and hatch their own. One more thing you have to look at for hatcheries is shipping charges. Some of the places that I looked at had shipping charges bigger then the bill for the chicks. Ideal does not have shipping charges to our state, all the chicks were healthy, there is less shipping time, and they have great customer service.

Neither had I. I thought it was a scam but I had to drive over to find out. Well, I actually called the feed store before I went over. I thought it was a typo. I thought maybe it was 5 chicks for every purchase but it was 10 per bag purchased. I hope they do it again this year because I will surely buy enough feed to get 100 chicks.

I got my first two RIR from Sac's in Gonzales. They were my first ever. They did have cocci and I didn't know how to treat in time. One died. I bought another RIR from Old Time. I started the one left from Sac's and the one from Old Time on Corid per BYC advice. The other one from Sac's died and I was left with just the one from Old Time that is Primrose, my avatar. That's how Primrose became my lone RIR bec then I bought the 2 Black Stars from a feed store in Baker. They looked terrible bec they were so pecked up from being 3 weeks old in small quarters with a bunch of others, but they were healthy. My Amercaunas came from a BYC local breeder and were healthy from the get go.

Dang it all, we dont have that special EVER around here! I would stock up each year that way! Course, not sure what types would be available. WAIT...... Maybe i should get my license and be THE ONE who hatches all the chicks for the feed store TO be able to do that! LOL

I have a few breeds that we would like to try for hubbys meat breeders. I would love to have a higher quality than hatchery stock. But I am not set on that. Especially since I haven't been able to find any that are around here and the kinds we are looking for. So I may give Ideal a try since they are so close. When we ordered from McMurray our broilers from them were Fantastic but they don't have the exact combo we are looking for this time and are much farther away.

We also have really enjoyed having the Cuckoo Marans we got from Terri and they are heavier than our other egg layers. I have been so impressed that they are both still laying very often and really large dark eggs too! They aren't too keen on us putting our hands on them, but that may just be because they came here when they were older. We have to be sneaky to catch them if we want to give them a close check over. Very, very reliable though!!!

What kinds are you looking for, meaties anyway? I am supposed to be getting some Black Cornish soon, cant wait to see how that goes. Supposed to grow a lot faster, but can free range, and all. I am excited about it!
