Ok folks, I made it through my first "culling".

Not as bad as I was afraid. I did not use the axe. Jennifer did one totally and showed me in depth what to do. The second one she got the head and I skinned it. I didn't have as much stamina as I need because I've been sick the past week or so and had 5 vials of blood drawn before going over to Jennifers. But it looked respectable when I finished with help. ha My utmost thanks to Jen for being so patient with her training. Terrific girl.

I have a few breeds that we would like to try for hubbys meat breeders. I would love to have a higher quality than hatchery stock. But I am not set on that. Especially since I haven't been able to find any that are around here and the kinds we are looking for. So I may give Ideal a try since they are so close. When we ordered from McMurray our broilers from them were Fantastic but they don't have the exact combo we are looking for this time and are much farther away.

We also have really enjoyed having the Cuckoo Marans we got from Terri and they are heavier than our other egg layers. I have been so impressed that they are both still laying very often and really large dark eggs too! They aren't too keen on us putting our hands on them, but that may just be because they came here when they were older. We have to be sneaky to catch them if we want to give them a close check over. Very, very reliable though!!!

I really like those Cuckoos -- those are from Russ Marans lines -- I am going to hatch some more this spring & get rid of some of my Wellies -- that's how much I like them! They are a bit stand-offish - that may be a Marans trait as my older hens are also like that.

Hi Everybody,
Sorry I took so long to get back on line! I have been to several doctors and going through a lot of tests at the hospital and labs. Every week it has been 2 or 3 days there and then really sore and out of it the following day. Plus dealing with Medicare and paperwork and Fema losing my Road home grant files from 2005! Every thing happening at once and a lot of sedation and trying a bunch of new meds have me really feeling bad. Thanks for your concerns and I will explain everything tomorrow, but right now I have meds for sleep, shutting me down for the night, so until tomorrow, bye for now and thanks for your concern! I didn't think I would be missed or that I have such caring friends! I AM TRUELY BLESSED!!!!!
Celie

So glad to hear you're OK & hope you are feeling better fast!

Celie, you are important to a lot of people. I'm sad you have been sick but so glad to hear from you.

Well they are worth that standoffishness (is that even a word? lol) Their eggs are just so pretty.
