It is definitely more work. But its worth it for getting those chicken nuggets grown fat and saves $$ on feed. If I had as many birds as you I would only use it as a treat for my layers.x2
I wish I could feed all of my birds FF but I have too many.![]()

I am new to raising Cornish X's and have questions....help lol my chicks are 2 weeks old and have been moved to an enclosure in the barn, which brings me to my first question: do i need warming lights still? the weather is in the 40's for the last few days and i have kept them on also i read something about the lights being a fire hazard is this true? they are currently hung 18 inches above chicks. Second question: i have done some reading on fermented food, i am hoping to feed my chicks this at four weeks old, is this a treat or an everyday thing? also what kind of whole grains should i use? Third question: my layers tail feathers are looking pretty ragged any ideas?

Hulled Barley and oats... sounds very costly??? I toss some oatmeal, diced fresh greens, cayenne pepper, rice, cooked beans, and some leftovers as a treat a couple days each week. Where you finding hulled Barley and what gonna be your cost on that? If you dont mind me asking...Welcome to BYC. Definitely go with the fermented feed. Got my buckets ready for when my first chicks come next month. I'm going with starter grower plus hulled barley and oats. Boss.![]()
Edited for content: ..

If its making you nervous you could go ahead and clip one or both wings. As long as they will still be able to access perches etc. Some breeds I clip their wings when they are young and still lighter in weight. But once they are larger and heavy they don't really need it. I guess its too much work to get that when they are full weight![]()

Ya know, I have never had to do this, but it is something to research... I wouldnt know which ones to clip?! One day... after we build our house, and I set up my chicken life the way I want it, I will be needing to do this... THANKS FOR THE PROJECT!!They are only going on 2 weeks and still in my house
